Video Experiments

Since Rick and others began posting their videos here It seemed a good idea to have a placeholder for using video in our models. My layout is far from complete and the scenery often varies from roughed in and painted to snow looking foam shapes or just plywood. Regardless, it is fun to see the railroad from a hum perspective.

Please join me and post your trials and tribulations, YouTube links and set up's for the camera(s), and how you "produced" and edited the video.

Saint Paul & Duluth RR Boxcar

St Paul & Duluth RR Boxcar

To All I am revisiting the SPD boxcar. This line was a Northern Pacific RR predecessor. I finally got around to weathering the car. Bragdon Weathering Powders was the medium used. Photo By Elvin Howland. Yours, Elvin Howland/E. St. Louis Rail Group Layout.

Question - Help and advice needed

Hello All
Merry Christmas!  Need to ask of ppl who have driven trains in the steam era when both a bell and whistle were used and available. Apart from OLC (Open Level Crossings) and signed Bell & Whistle posts.
When else was the BELL required?

I ask as I often see movies and real prototype videos  where  the bell is sounded when moving along a car (bitumen) road to reach a siding, near railway employees working on mains  and in some areas of yard work.

Bachmann 484 Northern Smoke Unit is Leaking

My boys were recently given a Bachmann 484 Northern train set from their Great-Grandfather. This kit looks to be from the late 70's early 80's. The boys are fascinated with trains and are excited to have their own steam engine that smokes! Unfortunately, when adding the smoke oil it leaks all over the wheel trucks and the track. I've tried taking the shell off but can't seem to find the second screw. Anyone know how to pop the shell off to investigate? Any suggestions on the leaking oil?

Duluth & Iron Range, 1901

I have decided to jump back into the hobby with both feet last month, after a nine year hiatus. Life is what happens to you while making other plans, I guess. This will be my ninth layout that I've built either myself or as part of a group. The most recent one was intended to be a shelf type layout around the walls. Made of MDF boxes that sat on standard double-wide shelf brackets. This only made it to the sub-roadbed stage before new jobs for my wife and I, plus two different houses put it under the landfill equivalent of the scrappers torch.
