Starting children on Model RR; When and how?
I am an American living in Germany, and I have two children that will be 3 in April. A boy and a girl.
Both show an interest trains; The boy more so. For now, they have a bunch of hand me down Brio type stuff, and enjoy building tunnels and stations from blocks.
Anyways, I was wondering what everyone's thoughts and experiences were in regards to taking the next step..
First, when to start them on "scale" trains and what type if set to get? I have a few ideas.
Ballast question..
I have been making my own ballast out of crushed granite/ rock dust. I get my supply at Home Depot.. It runs about $13 for a 50 pound bag. The bags are seasonal. That all being said, does anyone else use this method? If so, I am looking for alternate sources and as always good prices... Thanks in advance.

Toronto Railway Prototype Modellers meet
I am hoping I am not double posting something, somebody has already. But this news crossed the desk just a few minutes ago.

Rolling stock display diarama
I would like to build a diarama to showcase modern(2007-present)rolling stock. I need your help deciding what type of scenery, such as midwestern, rocky mountains, appalachian. I also don't know how to arrange the track, because I want to incorporate this into a future switching/shelf layout.I am doing this project because I don't have space to have a real layout. It would probably be 2'x4'.
Feedback on Shelf Layout
I am in the design phase (have the shelf already up, it is 18" deep by 8'-8" long) but wanted some feedback on my sketch. I'm not good with proportion and arent sure if I will be able to fit it all on there or even more.... The hill and stream must stay put, they are already there on the shelf but if you could give me some operational feedback or anything that would make it better. I want to try and get as much switch as I can without it being too crowded.

Op Sessions in Northern California
Every year we go back to see my family in California, specifically Marysville. This year I'd like to try and find a local op session to attend if the timing works out. Is anyone here at MRH in that area that either hosts or attends op sessions? We will be in California from June 14-21.
I came across a link from the Layout Design SIG covering layout tours from the 2011 NMRA Convention that was hosted in Sacramento, nearly all of these layouts are within a short travel time from my parents place.
Adapting Kato decoder to Athearn engine (N scale)
I have a brace of Kato SD40s in Algoma Central colours that of course I always run together (which is not only prototypical, but necessary to haul a heavy train up my 2% grades). Both are equipped with Digitrax DN163K1C decoders, which is a drop-in replacement for the factory light board. Then one day, one of the locos stopped running. The lights worked, but not the motor. After a little experimentation, I determined that it worked fine running solo, but the minute I consisted it (using Advanced mode), it became no more than a pretty decoration.
Adding sound and weight to a 44-Tonner
Since a number of people have asked me about it in the past, I finally did a post (actually a 3-part post) on the New Haven 44-tonners, including how I add sound and an extra 3 oz of weight to the Bachmann or W&R brass models. I also use the Bachmann mechanism for the brass version.
The modeling info is in Part III. Enjoy!
