A Replacement No. 2 for the BVLC (On30 Scratch-Bash)

Part 1: A Tale of Two Connies

Yes, I'm doing another locomotive build.  Unlike the others, this one has a bit of my personal On30 history behind it.

Modeling the Dubuque Railroad Bridge

The single track steel deck Mississippi River railroad crossing at Dubuque, Iowa to East Dubuque, Ill., is five spans of Parker Through Truss with a 350-foot Pratt swing span. (Pins are visible in photos.) I'm modeling the entire bridge at scale length (9-ft-plus in N scale). I will make the bridging elements with my CNC mill.

Hope someone here will help me with questions:

Wharf pilings

I want to model some wood wharf pilings before they are driven into the ground. The area I model can have the height of the tides up to 11 to 53 feet.

How far would the piling have to go into the ground? I'm trying to figure out the overall length of them and have them brought in by rail.

Would there have been flat cars long enough to deliver pilings this long in the late nineteen-fifties? Or would they most likely be brought in by truck? Would they be already prepped with something so they would last in water and mud?

Passenger service teminal question

Have a 22' x 12' room that I am going to run a double main line around the room mostly for N Scale passenger car sets.

Rite now I have the Kato California Zephyr and The Daylight passenger cars set.  Expect I will add a Sante Fe passenger set at some point.

Not going to do any switching or really any other sidings other than a passenger terminal.    Just want to watch these wonderful passenger cars go around the room.  I have an 0n30 layout below this so that satisfies any switching itch.

Track plan Rev 3

A bit more work ; now Rev 3. Moved the yard to the east wall since it is a key scene and made it virtually exact to the prototype. Move G&M Milling to the south wall. Only size industries but more than enough to keep me busy for 3 years. Each scene is sectional and can be moved when needed with only minor rework at the ends of each scene to blend into larger layout. I think this is getting there. The new siding at the top doesn't really existing and is continuous run, but the small siding north of it does, but is abandoned. A key scene for sure.

First draft track plan

A little time over lunch netted me this initial draft of a plan. Still very much a work in progress but I can get a good number of the industries on the line minus those in Statesville so I'm happy. I'll flesh it out a bit more and identify which industries are adjacent to each other and which would require a full lap around to get to since they are farther down the line than the plan shows at a future point this week or weekend. A quick calc indicates that using the lapping method for each town nets just over 4 scale miles of mainline. Not to shabby and quite a nice run for operations.

The Alexander Railroad in HO scale

Well construction will begin on my Fairview Industrial District this weekend on another FB page. I posted a track plan about it some time ago but life has kept me busy. For those that don't remember this layout will be my foray into HO switching layouts and will go along a wall behind me desk at work. Whilst I am building that, I have begun planning for my home layout. I have finally decided on a prototype that allows me to run operations solo while giving me a relatively decent sized railroad (7' x 20'). I have chosen the Alexander Railroad in NC.

A Question on Operations Terminology

I have 4x6 cards for each train that runs during my operating sessions with terse instructions about that train's switching duties. Most switching involves picking up cars that have completed being loaded or unloaded and setting out cars that are to be delivered.

For years I have for called the “pickup” cars “outbound cars” since they are leaving that particular switching area and heading for the main yard.  Likewise, I called cars coming from the main yard to the switching area “inbound cars”.

Frog Juicer Question

I have a Frog Juicer question....  I have a Hex Frog Juicer that has all 6 positions in service.  Now I've added one more turnout in that area of the layout.

My question is, can I double up two turnouts (frogs) under one position on a Frog Juicer?

Note:  My layout is almost all industrial/urban, and as such, the likelihood of two different locos running over the two "doubled up" frogs is extremely remote.

Note #2:  I know I can buy a Mono Frog Juicer, but wondered if I could forego that and just double up two turnouts?
