Other uses for non model railroad things
You never know where you might find something that can be used in model railroading. Case on point, these plastic food containers, that my wife has some of her desserts in. Make great small parts storage. Or paint mixing trays. Or.......

Layout Room Entrance, Swing-Down Bridge(s), 3 of them in combo
I'm building a double deck layout in its own handi-house shed It has a large wide door at the entrance that needs a couple of 'entrance bridges' that can be moved aside relatively quickly. Because of the large width of the opening I am thinking it should be a 'split bridge' type like the bascule type where both of the two sides would swing up.
Temporary buildings
Anyone have temporary buildings on their layout as place holders for the eventual actual model? I'd like some suggestions for materials and construction method, and painting them for maximum effect at minimal effort. I think simple throw away buildings could be very useful as tools to view and finalize the eventual scene as well as stand-ins for operations. Photos and construction techniques should make an interesting discussion thread.....DaveB
Weathering a coal tower --a new approach (as far as I know)
Here are two photos. The first is a photo of the White River Junction coal tower -- in the 50's at an age of 30 or so. The second is my attempt at weathering my model of that tower. The challenge here is two fold- one is to get the right overall color -- which is a grimy brownish grey. The second challenge is creating the illusion of the lines in the concrete which were left when the concrete forms were removed. I tried all sorts of things to create a sense of the concrete form lines - without much success (light pencil lines, brush strokes)

Model realistic Pine trees (Pinus Sylvestris that is...)
Hi! I made a video tutorial how I model Pine trees. I´ve been taking my time to evaluate some alternative materials too.
Trouble With Digitrax/Cell Phones
Having a problem with Digitrax taking an exceedingly long time in processing commands such as reversing a loco, sounding horn, responding to throttle. Something was happening on a friends layout and he now has guests during op sessions turn off cell phones. This seems to have helped measurably. Also, my wi-fi router is about 8 to 10 feet from the Digitrax electronics (DCS 100 & DB 150)
We will be conducting testing to see if we can replicate same situation and then turn off phones to see if things improve. We'll also do the same with wi-fi.
