Nice weathering example for roads with timber crossing
I happened to see this photo and found the road and wooden crossing interesting. Note the road grime continues over the wooden timbers for the crossing. Both the medium gray and the two darker stripes continue over the wooden crossings. This gives an alternative to the "fresh" timbers typically used on layouts I see.
The Pine Spur Chronicles
What started out to be a simple new layout with a loop of track, inspired by the one-town layout design concept, has morphed into a railroad that I have become very excited about building. It is still a basic loop that will start and end in a four track staging loop and pass through the town of Waipahu (pronounced “why pa who”) where cars will be left for the branch line.

Cataloguing Software for your engines and rolling stock
Cataloguing Software - what does one suggest for Cataloguing your engines and rolling stock. You can keep it all in your head but I want to photograph before and after weathering, list the weights, what I bought when and where. Any suggestions I was thinking excel then I saw you can get onenote templates.
White transfers, how do the professionals?
Dear all,
Some vendors who make white transfers, charge for a film in addition to the cost of the transfer. This implies they use an UV-reactive sort of blank transfer sheet. Does anyone know of a brand name for these sheets?
Thank you,
"SP" Phil
Pre-Order Announcement: TCS Universal WiFi Throttle
Is there a more In Dept technical info available about this TCS Trottle ?
After viewing the video's on the TCS web. more questions arise:
- How does it connect to the different EXISTING SYSTEMS ? (They only mention Digitraxx)
-Does one need the JMRI - wifi network to run - for example NCE ?
-What's the relationship with the upcoming TCS Command Station ?
-What EXACTLY can it do ?
-What.................. ????
Is this "pre ordering" a premature born baby... and find out by yourself ?

3D Printing - Rotary Coal Dumper
I have been reading with interest for some time all of the things that are being created in railroad with 3D printing. I finally broke down an purchased a printer and decided to do a project I have wanted to do for some time.
Ballast
I hope y'all don't think I'm strange. (I may be, but that's another issue). Has anyone ever successfully ballasted without glue? Is there any kind of ballast that could "possibly" be used that 1>won't blow away 2> isn't magnetic? The reason I ask is simple. Most of us get a layout to the point of running. And want to do so for a while to make sure the track and wiring is trouble free. Then, we consider ballast. And once that ballast is glued (Elmer's being the preferred glue), it is more or less permanent.

Helix Sub-Roadbed Thickness (and material)
I'm finishing off the last piece of my track-plan - that being "The Helix".....
I've been perusing the numerous articles/posts on MRH on this topic and have pretty much decided to go the route of using trapezoidal sections to build it.
At this point my helix will be ovular, single-tracked, 32" radius with a 12" straight section. This yields an approximate grade of 1.85%.
If you care to add in the "helix compensation factor", in my case that adds another 1% effective grade for a total of 2.85%.
