A useful and free diesel locomotive reference book

Found this quite by accident tonight surfing looking for the name of a brake part on an Alco truck.

Found it quite useful and downloaded.

Installation of Decoder related parts

This is my first decoder installation.  I am at a point where I need to mount the decoder, the keep alive and the speaker.  My questions relate to the best way to mount these items.  Photo below

Dave Williams of Unreal Details (Magic Water) has died

I was saddened to learn today that Dave Williams, the owner of Unreal Details, died in November 2021.  He created and sold the product Magic Water, a two part epoxy for creating water effects.  I found out when I sent an email today to the contact address because I wanted to show him photos of my successful river made with his product.  I immediately got an auto response that said that Dave had died in November, that the email was not being monitored and not to order any Magic Water.

Digitrax Zephyr for first control system?

Would anyone have reservations about using Digitrax Zephyr as a first train controller? I know NCE has a lot of praise but I hate the screen and generally don't like TV remotes. The Zephyr is $200, seems to have all the programming I need, has a decent display and also has nice add-on remotes. I don't love the layout for full-time use but it has nice add-on remote options. So $200 to get running, $300/$350 for remote/wireless. It seems like a bit much for a train or two on a small track, but the train I ordered does have full 28 F-functions plus lots of CVs to play with.

Joining HO Peco Code 83 and ME Code 70

Among the new US Track line products from Peco is the SL-115 HO Transition Track for Code 83 -Code 70. As most of my turnouts are Peco US Code 83 (the Code 70 turnouts are now just appearing in US hobby stores) and I like using ME Code 70 for sidings and 1950's yard trackage, I purchased a package of 4 of the new transition sections.

Note that the SL-115 contains a short piece of wire visible from the underside of the track piece soldered to the code 70 and 83 pieces to maintain electrical continuity through the transition.

Sammamish River Crossing

One of the universal problems with any layout is making access points to the layout, and retaining function of the space that the layout is in. In the same way, my outdoor layout needs access to the backyard. When I designed the track plan, I designed it to have as few duckunders as possible. However, one area that I couldn't eliminate or make into a nod under was the main walkway into the backyard. See top right of track plan below.
