Craftsman Structure kits?

I'm just curious, how many of you on here know what a craftsman structure kit is?

And if you do know, do you build them? Why or why not?

What's your favorite Craftsman Structures vendor, and why or why not?

Looking forward to hearing your comments, as always.

Experiments with Brick

My layout is nearly ready for some scenery so in preparation I've started experimenting with different painting and weathering techniques on my structures to try and achieve realistic results.  My current side project is coming up with a repeatable technique to create the look of an old, weather beaten brick factory that are common to the New York City area that I'm modeling.  The image below gives a decent idea of the look I'm after (which is ironically in Oslo; used with permission of the site host):

Building with Balsa-wood.

Building with Balsa-wood.

Not every one has easy access to Strip-wood, some like us in Australia live at the end of the hobby world. There are many hints on this site about working with Balsa-wood.

These below are a couple of my attempts at N Scale in Balsa. Layout is Australian Bush Sawmill/Logging 1929.

Concor Pierce-Arrow Goose

To anyone who has  one of these.  I got side stepped in my decoder tester build when I wanted to run mine.

Beware the rear light. It is incandescent and generates enought heat to damage the freight car body. Mine was  damaged. Concor is sending a replacement. in the mean time I replaced the incandescent with a warm white LED.  The Pierce-Arrow  car body has a, confirmed,  warm white LED so no damage in view.

Are S-turns inevitable in yards?

I am in the process of designing my first yard. Seems like every yard I've seen so far has at least one part with end-to-end turnouts, forming an S-turn. I see it mostly in the first rung of a ladder and in sidings. Is this OK in these circumstances? If I insert the suggested 12" of straight section between left & right turns then the parallel tracks are too far apart. I'm using #5 turnouts. Thanks for any advice.

The floor has been painted a medium gray too.

Returning after many years away.

 Hello all!

Well, I am returning to the hobby after many years away! I am excited about all of the advancements, but a few things I find really shocking:

1.  The quality of the locomotives and rolling stock has just sky-rocketed!

2. The price has sky rocketed as well...

My plans are to build a small shelf-switching layout.  I have not decided on theme, location, or anything at this point.  I have previously built an HO 4X8 layout (never finished) and an N scale layout on a door (semi-finished).

Thanks

I just "stumbled in" to this web site and am pleased to have joined. Very informative and I will be using information from here as I finally put my "paper dream layout" I have been carrying around for 30 years into lumber and trackwork. Yes, I'm a retired person who has been "in the hobby" almost all my life and now have the chance to do more than dream and draw.

Under Table Manual Turnout Controls

Yes, on the MR Magazine indexes!

They had an good article on how to build a push/pull manual turnout control that was spring loaded and had a spdt switch to change polarity in the frog.  Can't find it anywhere.

Can anyone help?
