Improving performance of Bachman 4/45 Tonners
Now that I've finally gotten some track laid I've been running my DCC equipped Bachman 44/45 tonners (new versions) as well as a Proto 2K H10-44. I realize the Bachmans are cheaper but I'm not very happy with the slow speed performance compared with the H10-44. The Bachmans are also very noisy at low speeds (and they dont have DCC sound :-).
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do to improve their performance ? Is there a suggested breakin method for these little guys ? Better decoders ?
Thanks,
John
P&PRR - modular n shelf layout
Hello, all. New to this forum, though I've been enjoying the magazine very much for the past couple years. Got so wrapped up in the magazine, didn't even think to look around the website and at the forums! D'oh!

Kadee #5 coupler trip pin
I don't intend to uncouple (Kadee #5) using any magnatic means. Therefore, is there any need to keep the trip pin? If they are not adjusted accurately they tend to hang up on switches. And I would like to clip them off. Other than magnatic uncoupling are they of any use?

Trestle Photo Help!

Giant Trestle
Hi Jack from Star, Idaho, I have completed quite a large trestle project and I am about done with the scenery. The trestle is seven feet six inches long (652 scale feet) and supports three main lines. By the time I was finished I had over 3200 pieces installed. The trestle has minature red led air craft marker lights (nine per side) and lighting shinning down on the rail line below it. The trestle stands about 80-85 scale feet high. I have added a lot of detail to include cat walks and railing on both sides, workers on the bridge and signallin
Cement Plant traffic
Hello all.
I am going to modeling the cement factory in Monolith California, and I have run into a slight road blok. I am looking for what type of rail traffic would support the plant. I was wondering where to look for this information.
If you have any thoughts I would really appreciate it.

Walthers 0-8-0 drivers
I have a new Walthers 0-8-0 that has 2 out of gauge drivers and am wondering if theres a "technique" to do this?
Helix construction
Hello all.
Well I am off building my helix to get to the second level of my layout. I am using a technique I read about in model railroader. In fact I have seen this style of construction at least two times that I can remember.
It is a simple way to build a helix. You cut out the subroadbed with a jig saw, and use spacer blocks to create the seperation between levels. Once the intial grade has been achieved (2% for me), the next levels will adopt the previous grade as you go along. I still think this is one of, if the, simplest techniques I have ever seen.
Amtrak 40th Anniversary sightings
On May 1st, the National Railroad Passenger Corp, or Amtrak celebrates its 40th anniversary! In honor of this occasion, Amtrak is repainting some locomotives and rolling stock in the older paint schemes.
There was a sighting of the first locomotive in Phase III paint this weekend:

Yet Another Helix Design
I needed a helix to get between levels on my layout but I had other requirements besides
diameter and grade. The helix is at the end of a peninsula and I wanted to have track and
scenery on both levels on the outside of the helix. This meant the helix needed to support
a smooth backdrop as well as upper foam benchwork, track and scenery. Finally, splice
plates weren’t feasible because of the grade and the required vertical spacing.
