Should I send it back?
I just got a new Athearn SW1500....I'm not sure I'm happy with it. I got a SW1000 before this and it runs like it's on glass and low noise, this one is loud and runs real bad at low speeds.
Here is a video of the engine, the Red SW1500 is moving at first with a cab setting of 4 ( NCE power cab ) back and fourth, then I move the Green SW1000 BN with the same cab speed and then change it to 1, then back to the Red SW1500 on 1 and you can see the difference and hear ti too.

Polishing Athearn Wheels
I have been reading a few posts on keeping Athearn locomotive wheels clean. Here is my take on the matter.
Short of replacing the wheels with NWSL or others, I "polish" the wheels using Mothers Mag and Aluminum polish. I also have used Flitz Polish. (this one is a bit more abrasive and I use it for stubborn wheels) (DO NOT do this on other brands of wheels as they are coated with chrome or nickle and you will rub it off defeating it's properties)
How to accomplish this:
wiring turntable off tracks
I'm at a point I can't put this off any longer. I have wired my layout into 4 blocks.

Culvert
I recently completed a small culvert on my layout and I'd like some comments from the group on its appearance. I used real rocks, gravel and sand secured with white glue followed by a wash of brown acrylic paint in the "wet" area. On top of that I added two coats of gloss medium and added highlights by dry-brushing white acrylic paint.
For the Reading RR modelers
Hi Reading modelers
From recent posts I gather that quite a few members model The Reading RR. While trying to do some research on a rr to model I stumbled on this. This man models the Shamokin Division of the Reading in O scale. I don't know anything about the Reading (except for the Monopoly game) and I didn't have time to read his website so I don't know how valuable this info will be to anyone, Here is the website:
Paper models
Just came across this site:
http://www.ss42.com/pt-buildings.html#10
where you can download paper model templates of buildings and such. Can be used as plans for scratchbuilt models or as temporary fillers for those empty spots. And they are free!.
Getting access to sound files higher than F12 in DCC
I have an N scale Athearn Challenger with some nice sounds using the supplied remote control using standard DC power. The list of other sounds using DCC is amazing! I wanted to get started with a system that could handle sound files above F12. I'm not sure if I need to get a deluxe DCC system by Digitrax, for example, or I'd be OK with just a starter set.
Could someone recommend a DCC set for a newbie?

Easy Model Railroad Inventory - Potential Addition #3
There has been a request to add wish lists for: rolling stock, locomotives and structures. More than likely it would be three different files.
What do you think? Vote Yes or No to help plan the future development of Easy Model Railroad Inventory.

Easy Model Railroad Inventory - Potential Addition #2
There has been a request that two additional fields be added to Easy Model Railroad Inventory. Both are date fields:
Last service date – last date locomotive/car was inspected maintained – ie checked couplers, wheels, bolster, looked for broken/missing parts, oiled, lubed, etc. – details of service in existing note box
How do you make a DCC short detector?
Hello All,
I saw a video once of a guy that somehow hooked a light bulb of some sort up to his DCC track/system, when it was shorted out the bulb came on and shut down the dcc system to prevent damage.
Does anyone know how to make something like this? Looks like a cool idea.
Also, because my english Spelling is not so good, does this site have a spell checker.....lol
Thanks,
Ernest
