83 All the Way?

I am looking over my track plan with an eye to starting to purchase rail. Aside from asthetics, is there any real advantage to having Code 83 for the mainline and, say, Code 70 for the yards and sidings? Is there that much visual differnce once ballast, landscaping etc. is added? What about availability of various switches etc.? Cost? Transitioning?  Your thoughts would be appreciated as always.

Compare JMRI Operations Program to other options

I am thinking about switching from 4 cycle car cards and waybills, which I have used for years, to train manifests and switch lists generated by JMRI's Operations program. I am seeking recommendations and/or comments.

Update on Bachmann Spectrum and Soundtrax

Hi, Jack from Star, Idaho.  I ventured out and did some looking at the 70 ton three truck climax that I received as a replacement for the defective shay.  Well I opened up the water tender and found that the PCB had a small motor function decoder with a standard 8 pin plug.  I removed that and removed the PCB to expose the speaker housing.  There I found that a one inch 8 ohm speaker fit perfectly in the factory made area  for the speaker.  No drilling holes or creating an area for the speaker a great improvement.

JL&T Railway Blog - How to video episodes...

 Hi All,

I posted a couple of short videos the other day after a request about short management on another thread, so after some favourable feedback and wanting to help others I've decided to take the next step.

I am going to produce a series of "How to for Model Railroaders" videos based around the building of the JL&T Railway.  If everybody enjoys the series and I have the blessing from MRH, I will produce a wide variety of topics of the process from building our layout.

layout so far on paper

This is my Design that I am building now. Two Issues I need help on, one is how do I ballast a yard? Do I cover the entire yard with even gravel or do I make like on the mains?

and second, How do you model dirt and grass, I know you can make/buy a static grass machine, but other that that what can you use??

Well, I was going to show you my plan, but I can't upload a PDF to show up....

Thanks.

Using syringes to apply CA

I need to apply minute amounts of super glue and I'm thinking of using a hypodermic syringe to apply thin CA cement?  But I have a few questions.  Does anyone have experience doing this?  Will the syringe dispense the glue before it dries?  Will the CA dissolve the rubber seal on the syringe or the barrel?  Can the needles and syringes be cleaned with Acetone to allow them to be reused?  Can I buy and use "regular" type syringes I've found online?

Thanks ahead of time.

Shortening Walthers-Shinohara Double Slip Turnouts

The BQR has a stub yard & industrial complex at one end of the layout. This has posed a number of interesting challenges not the least of which is trying to effectively utilize the limited space senior management has made available for the layout. The design for the yard utilizes a number of Walthers-Shinohara #6 double slips -- currently sitting on the benchwork. The turnouts as provided by the vendor are a bit over 15" in length. But there is a fair amount of track past the guard rails of the double slip -- almost 3".

Diluted Glue Despensers

I do not like the woodland glue sprayer.  It shoots all over the place.  I have used an eye dropper which is very directed but it holds little glue and needs refilling constently.  I tride a Hobby Lobby bottel with a single spout which would be fine but it leaks like a sive.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Layout #7 - The backdrop

Basic benchwork in the layout room is done, and I was eager to get started on subroadbed, including my first shot at spline construction (see http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/4683   ).  But I had to get the backdrop out of the way.  1/8" masonite curves well down to about 18 inch radius.  Below that, I was too chicken to find out with it dry.  But I did do a 10 inch radius corner after soaking the back at the curved portion with water (OK water and windex:  it was in the spray bottle already).  It was an easy one-man operation.  I supporte
