Alcove Expansion - Part 3: Mainline Track Sub-roadbed
These pictures were taken awhile ago as work continues with the installation of the sub-roadbed for the Southbound low level track. Only the mainline is shown here as the sidings will be added seperately as part of the next step.
Here's another view showing the progress. I've actually reached a milestone as I cut through the wall into the expansion area! More later.

Steel Mill Transfer Cars
Had a chance to sit down and build a couple transfer cars for my steel mill. Sill needs to be weathered, but over all I like how they turned out.
Short lines
I didn't know where to post this, so here goes. I have recently taken an interest in short line RR. I would like to model one that feeds into a BN main line ( Using My Hl&B RR) (Main Line, BN being my fav RR ). Now I have more room to make more benchwork, and lay more track. I was wondering if anyone had any info on short line RR, maybe some photos are them picking up or dropping off cars at a customer. I think this will help me plan the next track to layout.
Thanks for your help, I appreciate it.

What Turnout #'s to use for Yard & Sidings on HO Layouts
Hi, Fellers: What would U sugest as to the size of turnouts to use on a HO layout?
In the Yard:--
On the Main Line:--
On Sizings:--
Dear Mr. Walthers,
Dear Mr. Walthers,
I just bought a CSX track cleaning car ( http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/931-1752 ) and on the box it is listed as a 40 ft box car.
But once you have it on the track hooked to a 40 ft box car.....your car is much shorter, by almost 1/2 inch. The track cleaning car is almost the same height as a gondola car.
I can not complain about the cleaning abilty, as it works great on my track.

How Large?
How large is considered the limit on layout size when only one person would be mainly operating it?
I have considered my space and i have 15x20 feet. but am concerned if i decide to design a layout that uses the availible space it may be too large for just one person to construct and operate. My time and funds dedicated to layout construction and operation have no pre determined limits. it takes as long as it takes and costs what it costs to achieve the result i am after. does anyone have an input on what is deemed big enough for a single operator and what may be too big?
Digitrax DS64
I'm considering opperating my turnouts using a DS64 (connected to Tortoise machines) but I'd also like to have the ability to opperate the turnouts with facia-mounted toggle switches.
