Tender drive for steam - thinking out loud

Finding a way to fit a motor inside the boiler of a small steam locomotive has been a problem for as long as there have been electric model trains.  I have seen four solutions - make the model bigger, make the motor smaller, put the motor in the tender and run a drive shaft to the locomotive, or make the tender itself a pusher and let the engine roll freely.

Glaze only?

Hi all,

I recently painted/decal a Sunset brass PRR cabin car (N5b).The customer want it finished in an 'egg-shell/semi-gloss' sheen.Has anyone just used Floquil glaze for this? I am asking because I know I could have added it to the paint, after the fact the customer informed me he wanted the semi-gloss look,....

Thanks for any help,Dr Dirt

layout design ideas

I am interested in modeling the Detroit and Mackinac R.R as it ran in the 1950s,60s. This was a straight forward short line runing up the eastern part of michigan. I have an area about 11 foot by 3 foot.

How Did 1940s Industry (or R.R.) Switchers Use Runarounds?

Reading Lance Mindheim's Industrial Switching Primer for modern era.
I'm modeling mid 1940s and would like to know how use of a runaround
to get around the other end of the train was used.
The reasons Lance gives in his book for NOT using runaround tracks (passing sidings)
are time and cost related and would seem to make sense in earlier eras as well...BUT
labor was much cheaper then.

How much of this summary would apply to '40s era industrial switching?
Also would it vary for classification yards much?

"Real railroads go to great length to avoid runarounds.

Keystone Mill build thread

Hi All
One of my customers in Holland is doing a build thread for this kit on the kit forum and though you might like to check it out. He did a great job on it I think.

Starbucks Boxcar

To All: I know! it's not prototypical. My youngest son works at Starbucks (the best coffee around),

so I painted and lettered a car for that company using decals purchased on Ebay. Enjoy.
