Contact your local hobby manufacturer

For many years, I have been a model railroad consumer.  By that I mean that I would see a product I liked and buy it.  My relationship with the manufacturers has been very simple - they make what they think they can sell, and I buy it if I think I want it.

IT'S CHRISTMAS - First loco

IT'S CHRISTMAS

I know this is silly, but I'm excited.  Tax season ended Tuesday - I can go home on time and not work til 9-10 pm; and

MY 2-6-0 AND TRACK JUST ARRIVED FROM MICRO-MARK.

My first engine in over 25 years.

Mixing Proto 48 track with standard O Scale track

There are some manufacturer's of Proto 48 Flex Track that is significantly less than Micro Engineering and Atlas Flex Track.  Before we purchase any though, we need to find out if the two types can be mixed?  OR is there enough difference in the gauge that they can't.

Southern RR Kaolin Car

To All: I love the unusual. When I spotted the photo of a converted Southern RR boxcar for use

in Kaolin Clay loading,  I decided to model one. Here are the pix  of modeled, then painted

Proto Resources

Most of you may know this excellent resource for prototype locomotives.  If not, check it out!  Many contributors maintain a frequently-updated list containing entire locomotive rosters of almost every railroad out there (they even have a "fallen flags" section, which I have yet to browse).  I find myself on this site especially when I'm trying to figure out from what road a specific locomotive originated from.

Blending N scale Kato with Code 55

My Bolero, Lindy & Tango RR will undergo major changes when we finish the attic room and I'm having lots of fun drawing plans. It appears that the new layout will be in a "T" shape and I plan to use Kato Unitrack turnouts combined with Atlas Flex Track as much as possible because I'm impressed with the reliability of that combination. Several of my existing Atlas turnouts have been troublesome and the insulated frogs are bad for my short-base steam locos. When I replace them with Kato, everything is fine.

Modeling Excellence - Miniaturization

Well now - can you model this small? In the eye of a needle?

I have painted molded figures in N scale somewhat well, but this person really "takes the cake". He sculpts AND paints - 1:5000 ? - 1:10000 ? molecular paint thickness ?

Droppin' Feeders!

When I was starting out, wading through the muck that is YouTube produced no concrete answer as to how a DCC layout should be wired.  Wiring books suggested that I use chunky, stranded wire that just looked way out of place soldered to the rail and speaking with some of the experienced "old timers" I always got the same answer: "What's a DCC?"  Seeing that I was not getting consistent answers (and wasn't aware of MRH yet!), I decided to use what I had available, which is almost always the co

Best steam sound for the money?

I'm putting this in DCC since that's where all the best sound systems are these days, as far as I know.  If there's a better option, I'd like to hear about it.  And of course I know that "best" is a very subjective thing.

In your opinion, what is the best steam sound for the money?  Bang (or chuff) for the buck, what would you chose?  Or is that the wrong question entirely?  Should I simply be asking about the ultimate best quality, and just figure out how to pay for it?
