New US Historical Map Tool

The USGS and esri have released a new map tool / site for finding and downloading US Historical maps. Finding relevant maps on this site is definitely simpler than using the search options on the Historical Maps site. Point, click and scroll operations allow one to find, identify (by date and scale) and display relevant maps.

Proto 2000 Gummy Gears

I bought a new in box Proto 2000 FA2/FB2 set off of eBay.  Though the boxes had never been opened, I suspect that the units are several years old.  After removing the chassis from the box, I attempted to rotate the motor by pushing on the flywheels and noticed that the motor was very stiff, and that the front truck would shift back and forth when I changed directions on the flywheels.  I removed the cap that holds the worm gear to the truck and found that the bronze bearings were very stiff and gummy.  With the worm gear removed the wheels would turn freely.  What i

Pulling Power

When filming last night for our club's Ft. Hunter display (to be posted in a few days), I ran into a problem with a 15 car, weighted train. My Bachmann Berkshire was unable to pull the string with Digitrak power set as high as 80 percent. Wheels barely moved while the sound gave the indication that we were running at speed.

Locomotive Wheel Spinout

I'm still in the process of setting up the tracks on my HO layout. I am setting up my layout to have my bench work as a two level bench work layout that runs completely around the inside walls of an old recycled 20 foot travel trailer except it doubles back in a 180 degree turnaround on each side of the entrance door to give a complete (in a roundabout way) continuous circular run that goes between the lower level and the upper level..

Road Salt Facility

Hello,

Does anyone know of a kit similar to this road salt building:

My original plan is to model the facility on the left with a Pikestuff Quonset Hut building:

Identifying missing part on loco

I have a brass switcher that is missing this unpainted part; probably broke off due to handling over the years. Does anyone know what this is and if a part like it could be found or even made?

Shot of my loco: Note where part broke off/missing.
