Dents and Dings
I'm sitting here fighting a cough and cold viral flu now for the 14th day. Time to start feeling better and work on a project I can manage while recuperating. This brings me to my scrap box and a couple of cars that are less trucks and/or missing other items and not deemed repairable - the perfect vehicle to practice on!
Custom Coal Loads: tips/advice needed
Hello. I've recently tried an experiment with making my own coal loads for my sizable HO scale hopper fleet. However, the experiment didn't go so well so I've decided to ask for help from the forum. I'm using scenic express coal for the loads and the cars range in size from 55ton to 100ton. What base material should be used for the loads so that they can be removed fairly easily (I.e. no wrestling with the car in order to get the load out)? Also, what's the best way to get the different shapes from the different loaders? What's best for gluing it down?

Gang Car to Steeple Cab
I am rebuilding a Lionel gang car into a steeple cab. It won't be prototypical, but will be very close to a steeple cab. Main difference is mine has one truck, and larger wheels. I'll post some pictures of how it is progressing. I have already started, considering on doing an interior. I'll put pics in when I have the time to shoot some. This project is being made out of low budget materials. No, wait. I meant "no budget" materials! I'll try to get in posts once a day, if I can. It's gonna be a slow project.
Weathering roof
I haven't weathered a model in a while and never had a car with a white roof. Looking for ideas. The car will represent one that is three years old that traveled from the southern US to the east coast of Canada occasionally.
Perhaps a wash on the roof followed by some chalk brushed on?
"Boulder Ridge" Free-moN Module WIP 02/24/15
Quick update.
First off, I recommend using a piece of plastic wrap between your clamp and whatever you are gluing down with Gorilla glue.
Works great. Once dried you can carve away the excess.
Winter Blahs
I was in Barrie on the weekend visiting the in-laws and as we drove over a BCRY crossing, I saw something troubling...the right of way was completely buried in pristine, untouched whiteness and the snowbanks lining either side of the crossing showed no signs of being disturbed. My guess is that there has been no activity on the line for at least three weeks.
Ship It Software
Does anybody have any experience of Ship It software and if so would you recommend it? I am really interested in the card and waybill system but would like some advice before buying it.

How many kinds of RS3ms are there?
Anyone know how many kinds of RS3ms there are/were? (Send in pictures of every last kind of RS3m you can find!!!) Also, how many are left, and where are they? Sadly Cape Cod Central scrapped 1201 roughly 2 months after I visited the cape for the first time. I took the train that year, and saw 1201 out the window. Then, about 3 years later, I saw this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olZQ2gRjbl0

computer connection
I want to connect my laptop to my MRC Prodigy Advanced 2. Can I use my RR-CirKits Loco Buffer-USB interface or do I have to use the MRC 1516 interface hardware. I don't want to go the added expense unless I have to. If bad goes to worse, I could always move the MRC system to my HO layout and move the Digitrak system to my N scale layout.
I bought the MRC because 1: it's to run an N scale layout; and, 2: I do not like the style of buttons that the Digitrak system uses. Much to my horror they both use the same style of buttons !

Gluing styrene - because not everybody knows
I don't know why, but I just assumed that everybody knew how to solvent weld plastics like styrene. I guess it's something I've known for so long that I forgot I had to learn it somewhere. So, in the spirit of teaching and sharing what I've learned, I'l pass on this tip and a little explanation of why it works. Hopefully you'll never again feel the need to reach for ACC or Super Glue when you want to bond two pieces of styrene.
