What makes a Good Ops Session?
Recently I hosted an operations session on my Diamond River Valley Railroad. I considered it a good session based on a couple of things.
1. The attending crews all seamed ot have a good time.
2. All trains ran, and for the most part they were very close to the scheduled departure times.
3. My name was not called out many times. (No electrical or Mechanical issues)
4. My initial after ops session inspection looks like all revenue cars were correctly picked up and dropped off.
So what makes a good session on your layout?

Source for Kato SD38-2 Non Dynamic Brake Hatch
I am looking for a Kato SD38-2 Non Dynamic Brake Hatch. Kato is sold out and I have not found any on eBay or turned up anything through local train shows and swap meets. Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Track Planning and Operating Rules
As I progress with benchwork I am beginning to realize that the true dimensions I have feel much bigger than they did in CAD. While this means that the trains should look nice and I will have plenty of room for large industries and great scenery, I've realized that I have left out the potential to use space above one of the helixes. the plan was to just build a large canyon, but this is a big area that may be useful.
Railroad Art on Buildings
To All: Here is a recent photo of an art piece (in this case a photo) I took recently on the side of a building (I believe it is the Senior Center) in Manton, Michigan. Please post any photos you have of railroad art on the side of buildings. Yours, Elvin Howland/E. St. Louis Rail group Layout

Any Time is Train Time!
I love this sign posted at a real grade crossing on a real railroad in Saskatchewan...

BNSF Track Measurement Train
I was walking to the library with Christine. We have to cross the BNSF tracks through Longmont, CO, to get there. I wanted to record a train at a grade crossing as a ringtone for my phone. Well, today there was a train approaching as we crossed the tracks. So I got out my phone and used the video to capture the sounds. I wasn't really looking at the train as it approached. I didn't see what it was until I was recording, The video is not the best because I really wasn't thinking "video" when I started. It was an interesting very short train.
DCC Basics
Bruce,
Enjoyed your article in the latest MRH.
From experience I would also add that it is important to:
1. Use a simple "buzzer" connected to the track as you wire feeders to the Bus to alert for any incorrect connection.
2. Use a multimeter (or buzzer) to test any switches that are wired to isolate the frog. It is easy to cut the frog rails and isolate them but get some metal filings in the gap. Also it is an instant check that all the solder connections are solid.

Kato-repowered P2K Geeps
I wrote this up on the old Atlas Forum several years ago, but seeing comments from "MikeC in Qld" in this week's WPF thread about how poorly his P2K Geep runs made me realize it might be good to repost it here. I'm moving the bulk of the post to the first reply so all the text and photos don't repeat on each page.
Middle school model RR: talk me out of it
Being a teacher is intrinsically rewarding. I work hard during the school year, and get a couple of carefree months off during the summer. Not much pay, but I’ll take the tradeoff.

IAIS's West End - My new favorite speaker
I recently was reminded of Bill Brillinger's speaker comparison thread at http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/17902 and started investigating iPhone 4s loud speakers (long skinny one at the bottom of the phone, not the cube-shaped earpiece speaker), which are commonly available on Ebay for less than a dollar w/free shipping.
