Aug 2015 Act I - Pete Smith's Loon Lake Railway
The Loon Lake Railway & Navigation Company is a railroad that could have been. Pete Smith and his friends have been working on this Sn3 beauty for over 16 years. Watch it now on TrainMasters TV ....

Horseshoe & Cottonwood Update #3
As usual I'm too busy building the layout to blog about it! Some new stuff this week:
Starting to rough out Lubkin Canyon and the tunnel that gets the railroad into the canyon. The standard gauge to Mojave runs off the edge of the layout at bottom right. The elevated line on the inside of the canyon is one of the switchback handles. More:
Shelf layout question - Should plywood be used under XPS or is it just as good gluing the foam to the framework?
I've seen it done both ways by experienced modelers. The layout (main section is 2' x 8'8") is designed to be portable but that's only if I move. I'll be using cork or Woodland Scenics roadbed under the track. Will using plywood on the framework followed by foam be significantly quieter than just gluing the foam to the framework?

Glass Insulators: how do you model them, and can you improve it?
Sorry, it's been a long time since I've posted anything. I wanted to make this post because I've recently become a glass insulator collector, and eventually I realized that I might be able to lend some food-for-thought here. See, most people just have simple poles without wires if they even bother with the poles, and they all look identical, full racks of insulators, maybe not even colored like insulators. I saw a article in a MRR magazine by Pelle Søeborg on trackside telegraph poles.

Grande Pacific Railroad Trestle Compete
Work on the Big Scene is 99 % complete. Always weeds and some grass to put in. Video Will follow. Will do video on bead board and hot knife this is the cheapest way to go for scenery. Soo Line Latta Subdivision
I model the Latta Subdivision of the Soo Line in southern Indiana in the early 1990s. Seriously, the Soo Line served southern Indiana? Yes, it actually did after it took over the Milwaukee. During that time it had about a train a day of bridge traffic to the Norfolk Southern in Louisville, but its bread and butter was hauling coal from multiple loadouts up and down the line. The Latta sub was isolated from the rest of the Soo Line since it used the ex C&EI from Terre Haute to Chicago and the ex Monon from Bedford to Louisville.

Attention Canadian Modelers
Attention Canadian Modelers... The Canadian Tire flyer in my part of the country (Woodstock, NB) is advertising digital calipers at $15. If you've never used calipers in your modeling they are wonderful measuring tools. I believe these measure in decimal inches and millimeters. I'm going to get a set as a backup.
Lights & Animation
To All: Today I present a decision many of us model railroaders face, namely, do I install lights and animation to my
layout? I will phrase the question like this--Pros and Cons. Pros-1) Lights sure look great for night scenes
in buildings and strret lights 2) Animation is a great conversation subject, such as a working coal dumper.
Dinosaurs Do Exist!
To All: Dinosaurs do exist (at least on our model railroads). Photo by Lawrence Eggering. Yours, Elvin Howland/E. St. Louis Rail Group Layout
