Covered Hoppers in Lime & Borax Service
To All: Today I present two covered hoppers that I weathered for Lime & Borax Service. I used spackling to achieve this look. This type of weathering would definitely fit in the extreme weathering category. Yours, Elvin Howland/E. St. Louis Rail Group Layout

Pledge Floor stuff (was Future)
So I bought some Pledge floor care stuff, what used to be called Future. I am planning to use it as suggested with water slide decals to ensure a good bond with the surface and to eliminate silvering. I am also interested to use it as a general gloss coat for models. I am wondering if it can be airbrushed without thinning and if it needs to be thinned what would I thin it with. It looks pretty watery in the bottle. BTW the bottle is blue and white here in Canada. $8.77 at my local WalMart.
Jul 2015 Bonus - Decoder install in Athearn blue box loco
Roger Chrysler returns to the TrainMasters TV studio to demonstrate the installation of a DCC decoder in an Athearn "blue box" F7 locomotive, including a replacement LED headlight. This clinic is designed for beginner to intermediate hobbyists who might find a hard-wire install a bit intimidating. Follow Roger step-by-step as he shows us tips for reliable operation. Basic skills such as stripping wire, soldering and gluing are required.

Snow plow
It's too early, at least in this hemisphere, to think of that four-letter word, but a friend sent me this link that was fun to see:

Realistic Summer Trees
This past week I decided to take on the daunting task of adding trees for some much needed height to my layout. For months I had avoided this task because one of the great challenges of model railroading is to fabricate a convincingly realistic tree. Sure there are many examples online which offer their own expertise, and I would like to thank them for their input. I've combined all their know-how into these simple steps. After experimenting with various scenery materials I found a winning technique (which I'm lucky to say came on the first try).

A layout visit with Tom Dill
Charlie Comstock hosted a rare Saturday daytime op session on the BC&SJ yesterday, and I got to be the Redland Yardmaster for both tricks. I only took one photo (Charlie took a lot more), and that with my smartphone:

What's on your Workbench? - August 2015
Ok, time for a new what's on your Workbench. I know it's August and there won't be much modeling happening, but on those hot or rainy days there always seems to be a couple of spare hours. So let's see what you got.
Edited Note: There was some confusion because I named the thread wrong. It has been corrected.

LED Strip Lighting - how far out from backdrop?
Hi all,
I'm in the process of installing the layout lighting for my BVLC layout. I'm planning to use 'warm white' LED strips, which are self-adhesive on one side, and run them along a valence at the top of the layout. The valence itself will be made out of plastic, and will be supported off the backdrop by thick wires - the same type of wire used in those indoor clothes drying racks. This is needed, as the layout has to be free-standing (my house is a rental).
