JL&T Railroad - Top Deck Staging area...

Hi All,

Here is a little update of the installation and first run of the first Staging Area to grace the JL&T.  The area is located on the south side of the layout room, it is 5 metres long (16.5') & 250mm long (6") and is 3 tracks...  Two tracks are destined for storage and one is for a run through and to pick up the helix.

The construction is 70mm x 35mm pine girders, 19mm plywood base, with 6mm plaster/drywall base and 3mm cork track base.  The track is Peco Code 83 Flextrack, the track is pinned down using track pins.

Trackwork at top of logging incline

New to this website, so far it looks great. I am looking for any information on how full log cars were delivered to the top of an incline. I have been through thousands of historic photos and have yet to find one that shows the top of incline. Did find one that showed Donkey engine used to pull loaded cars from a spar pole, but what I would like to find is how track was laid to the incline . Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Clear log

My latest trackplan for the Vermont Railway - Clarendon and Pittsford subdivision.

The Train Room aka The Mother in law room.

The Train Room aka The mother in law room.  This room is 11.5' x 19.5' built on the back patio of the house.  The owner before me used it as an art studio.  I used it for storage at the time of the photos.  The room has no climate control and 2 doors with 2 types of windows on the East (Glass Door Sliding Door) and West (Normal Door) walls.  The north wall (Finished at this time) is a 2x4 stud wall with the back yard on the other side.  The south wall is the the house (Cinder Block wall).  You can see the slope in the ceiling fr

Turnout Operations - Deseronto Yard

The Deseronto Yard is proceeding. The row of Humpyard levers has been installed next to the control panel. It seems to make a lot of sense for operating a bunch of turnouts packed into a tight space and right close to the operator. I had started out using Tortoise motors but realized that it was getting pretty expensive and it was hard to keep the rather bulky units from interfering with each other.

Response to turnouts

The web site for the manufacturer of Tortoise is >>

Go to the catalog and you will find all kinds of tricks and diagrams.

Hope this is helpful.

Turnouts

OK, it's time to start on the harder portion of track laying. The two hidden staging areas now meet up with the rest of the layout and the switches that lead to them. Here's my problem: I can reach all of the layout switches for hand throwing without much trouble. However, I may want to "automate" some turnouts using a "Tortise" switch machine and I haven't a clue as to how to install them. I inherited these machines from an old friend who no longer models (age and infirmity issues) but have no paperwork.

Summer Shunting Shelf Project

My nine-year-old daughter & I are building an N-scale shelf switching layout for the summer. Even though layout design is one of my trades, my daughter brushed aside my ideas & jumped on Byron Henderson’s “Alameda Belt Line”: a 1’ x 6’ shelf designed to fold in half for portability.
