Layout design
Planning Stages
It's time for me to quit lurking and start posting. I just relocated to the Chicago area, and once we close on our house in about a month, at last I'll have a decent-sized basement once again. For the last five years, my modeling attempts have been confined to single-car garages and utility rooms jam-packed with other stuff, so that the prospect of making regular progress was nigh impossible. Shuffling out into a dim, damp, cold garage in the middle of an Ohio winter to work on the railroad meant that I didn't do it very often.
Free-moN Staging Yard - 16"x10'
It was showtime at the Hiller.
Silicon Valley Free-moN had our modules set up and trains running only to find...
ONLY ONE PASSING SIDING ON THE WHOLE LAYOUT????
We had over a week of show and the ability to run only two trains at a time?
What would happen next Sunday when the whole group showed up and wanted to run trains?
Draw straws?
Stand in line?
Something had to be done!
So I built (most of) a staging yard in (most of) a week.
Fast Tracks, Micro Engineering, Central Valley, or old school handlay?
I'm looking for some opinions of the more detailed track systems. I recently dismantled my layout due to a move, it was built with Atlas code 83.
Looking for Inspiration!
Hi everybody! I have been thinking for some time of starting on a new layout with a winter theme, that would connect to my existing layout that was still waiting to be transported to my house from my parents basement.
layout design ideas
I am interested in modeling the Detroit and Mackinac R.R as it ran in the 1950s,60s. This was a straight forward short line runing up the eastern part of michigan. I have an area about 11 foot by 3 foot.
The Train Room, More photos from the GS&M Layout
Checking for bench work height with old portable layout (Was from and old railroad plan book). Your looking at a 2 foot wide section over a 1 foot wide section. You can also see the reach problem with the 2 foot wide section.
Anyone built a layout in a shipping container?
has anybody built a layout in a shipping container?, I am thinking of using a 40 footer.
Moderator edit: Changed thread title to be more specific.
Car and Loco Shops
With a little time on my hands I was able to do some work on a project that I been wanting to do for a while. I have had one of the older Walthers transfer tables and wanted to build a car shop and loco shop on the layout. Just have to finish weathering and adding details around the area.

if you are interested in Australian desert model railways
Hi All
I just joined, MRHM has got some great tips, if you are interested in Australian Desert Model Railways, check out my Blog for one of my layouts, Barcoola.
Barcoola is my take on Tarcoola, the junction between the Central Australian Railway (to Alice Springs and Darwin) and Perth Western Australia.
I model Australian National in 1993, lots of long trains, double stacking, TOFC, Roadrailers etc.
