Layout design

small layout desing - round one

Hi guys, if I can get the plan to upload, I'd like some feedback on my preliminary layout design.

It's HO scale, and has to fit into a small space - in this case a 6'x9' shed. One wall is concrete block, the others are timber with 12mm particle board lining.

Realising that unless I switch to N scale (which I don't really want to do) there's no way I'm going to get in a long mainline run, so some switching is going to be the order of the day.

2 Yards on the GS&M - Old Pueblo Yard: OPY & La Grange Industrial Park: LGIP

With all the talk about Yards the last few days.  I figured I would post a few photos of the 2 main Yard areas on my layout The Gila Springs & Mesquite.

yard design

Does anybody have a good ideas for a yard design? what i am attempting to design is a small modern era regional type yard with a small engine service area. The givens are: 3-4 classification tracks (most train are through), separate arrival/departure tracks (at least two), and an area to park some spare locomotives.

Sound for DC analog block/cab control (non DCC) layout?

I have a moderately large DC cab control non DCC layout that I would like to  equip with sound. Is there anybody else out there who still is not into DCC? I hear about dual mode DCC devices that run on both DC and DCC systems. I have also heard about the Tech6 power supply that is supposed to give sound to DC layouts. I have no idea whether these devices really work on DC layouts to provide locos with sound. Are there any other DC modellers out there that have installed sound on their DC layouts?

Thoughts And Ideas

Start at the beginning

Like I suspect many of you, I've been wanting to build a model railroad for some time. Until now I haven't had the money, or a space to actually build. I suspect many who have the interest, also have the same problems.

A Small Switching Layout - Redux

Thanks to everyone who commented on my last set of track plans, I think I have managed to get closer to what I want to build. The main difference from my previous track planning efforts is that I went back to the prototype to see what I could learn from it.

ICRR Poydras Street Yard - Progress Report

Well, very little progress has been made since last writing. I have some health issues that are preventing me from sitting at the computer for any period of time, but they are improving and I plan to make a day of designing tomorrow to try and finish the track plan and get it up here sometime early next week for comments here.

Bulk Comodity industries : Spur length and position

Dear MRHers,

Was just looking thru some MRR blogs, and saw something which has me scratching my head.

There are many modellers who use single-ended spurs to handle "bulk commodity" loading/unloading. I'm thinking primarily of:
- woodchip rotary dumpers
- coal and ore loaders (not "flood loaders" with balloon-loop systems, eat too much space for most modellers)
- molten steel (torpedo or "tip-over pot" ladle cars?)
- Grain loading/dumping
