Layout design
120 day challenge first update blog
Well, after accepting the 120 day challenge that was posted, I was able to complete one of my goals so far. I was able to get more wood to finish the bench work. Although running out, I was able to get a small 4ft section of plywood after my wife told me so I grabed it for only a few dollars. SO for now, all benchwork was done, and the next step is a bit of cleaning and sorting what is going where, and then on to the pink foam. So without further delay here are some new pictures...
What would you do?? (Peninsula in a smaller room or Modular in a larger room)
I was talking with my basement zoning commissioner the other night and potentially have the go ahead to secure 24"ish of right away around the perimeter of the basement. This is both encouraging and frustrating. I recently completed construction of a layout room that is 18' (the width of the basement) by 19'6". I have a two deck plan that is around the walls with a peninsula up the middle. The challenge here is that there is no more that 12' of straight track and curves take up a lot of room.
Tweaks
PROGRESS UPDATES ON PAGE 2 - 7/15/2012
A quick "tweak" to my Iowa Interstate Grimes Industrial Track layout this week. But first, let me set up the story.
Gila Springs & Mesquite Track plans
This is the GS&M track plan for now. I do not have the transition level or the staging yard track plan shown. both not very exciting to look at. We do have Red Mesa Mine and Knot Mine on the transition level as it pass around Noose aka Transition level.
The 2 track Main Helix runs from the stage yard located under the lower level up to La Grange. The Main Helix is used for getting trains in and out of staging and can be back filled with trains during operations. Inner loop is down, outer loop is up.
The Split Helix is going in and the start of the Main Helix (Basin & Green Valley)
The end of the stage yard that feeds the entire layout.
Try Try Again
Ok, here is another pass. Clockwise from left. Staging (Bethlehem), comes out of the Perkasie Tunnel, splits to a two track main. Siding that splits for the team track (which had a gantry crane) and the freight station. Perkasie Passenger Stn, and then the siding for a coal distributor, a feed mill and a place called Mt Alto. Then on to Sellersville and Lansdale. I will reserve putting a bridge across the door way for continuous running as the "Board of Directors" would have a fit with that.
First attemp at HO design.
Here is my first attempt at a HO design. Not happy, but I gotta start some where. The corner where the two ends almost come together is the entrance and I cannot block that. Not even a duck-under. On this I want to learn track laying, and wiring, no DCC yet. I also want to experiment with track detection & signalling.

Walthers transfer table
Anyone have any experience or ideas about incorporating the Walthers transfer table into a layout design? I am thinking of a small HO layout (about 3 x 8 ft) that focuses entirely on the engine servicing facilities.
Switching hidden staging yards
OK, this is partially operations and partly layout design. I am considering having a staging yard that's hidden. In fact, it would be just a foot underneath the main (visible) yard, so it cannot be realistically switched in place. As such I think it's only viable for, well, staging. How does everyone else switch the trains to make up the staged trains? Just use one of the visible yards in a non-operating session?
