Putting Lights and Sound in a Genesis MP15AC
Since I like several different prototypes, one of the desires of my Office Park Zone layout is to make it easy to change between different locales. By changing just a few details, I can run trains from CN, CP, BN, a shortline, or anything else.
LokSound install into a "DCC ready" Kato
Good evening,
I have a Kato GP-35 that's "DCC ready" (8 pin connector on a board). The board is held in place by 2 screws on vertical mounts. In more recent versions, I'd imagine that the board would have been held in place by the now popular "universal" clips on either side of the motor. The distance between the screw is not the same as the clip type.
Colorado Front Range RR- January 2018 update
Here is where we are in January on getting the layout done. Look at a SD-9 with a TCS WOW 101 Decoder and a Look at the Western Foundries in Longmont and some trains running. Hope you enjoy this update

Bachmann RF-16 decoder replacement
I'm looking for recommendations on decoders to replace the noisy stock decoders that are in my two Bachmann RF-16 Sharks. I'm not interested in adding sound to these engines. I'd just like them to run smooth and quiet.
Thanks in advance.
A couple of videos from 2002 UP Challenger & Circus Train Runby
For my first blog entry, thought I would share two of my videos that I took on 8mm videotape back in 2002. Some of you have probably seen these on another forum.
Had this on 8mm video tape for years (obviously) from July 6, 2002. Recent messages here got me interested in digitizing it and here it is! And, yes, that is me taking pictures at trackside (still haven't digitized them, they are 35mm film). Taken in Mt. Prospect, IL (just north of OHare Airport.

I am asking the MHR community for some help in solving a problem I created with my choice of layout scenery. My layout was originally conceptualized 25 yrs ago as a much smaller layout with no intention of adding a backdrop or anything like that. I started this current version with the old idea then expanded it because I had the room to do so. Although I do plan on adding a backdrop at some point, I didn't take this into consideration when I stuck with the basics of how I originally thought the scenery would look.

When I last posted I had just completed adding rocks to the newest section of my layout. I flew to CA for vacation on 12/27 and am still here now in LA on business until Feb. Of course that means I don't get to work on the layout but before I left I took a few more photos to share after I had colored all the remaining white plaster with Woodland Scenics earth pigment. It really makes a huge difference. Even without grass or trees the layout starts to look more realistic.
Atlas/Athearn BB Repowering
First off, Happy New Year to all.
I have been perusing MRH, A-Line/PPW, and NWSL sites for cross reference guides on what replacement motors work best in the older 1970/1980 Atlas and Athearn BB locos.
What combo of motor and flywheels have worked for you? In particular I have a series of Atlas/Roco Yellow Box GP and SD units where the motors are simply worn out. No amount of tinkering in JMRI with speed tables or pulse width modulation will get them to run quietly and at low speeds.
What color is used inside engine cabs?
Happy New Year fellow model railroaders!
Looking at old phots is seems that Santa Fe, and maybe other railroads, used a green color inside their engine cabs.
Can anyone tell me what paint, or mix of paint, I could use on my models?
Preferable Vallejo paints.
As a side note, does anyone know why the green color is so often used inside the engine cabs?
