A Visit to Neil Erickson's Umauma Railway!
Today my wife and I had the pleasure of visiting Neil Erickson's Umauma Railway ( Neil's Blog ) just outside of Hilo Hawaii. Neil is a long time friend from this forum and this is the sixth of my MRH Friends layouts we have been able to visit.
After a picturesque drive down UP the backroads outside of Hilo, we arrived at Neil's farm. It's a quaint location not far from the coast, in an area that used to be vast sugar cane fields.
Traveling around the USA looking at 1:1 and looking at and running some 1:87.
Hello All,
Racket At Riverdale!
Chicago Yellowstone and Pacific big Baldwin center-cab DT 6-6-2000 #58 departs Riverdale north on the Riverdale Sub to Brighton Park.
Kitbashed in 1995 from Stewart AS-616 bodies on a scratched frame with Mashima motor and A-Line flywheels, #58 recently received a Loksound Select Micro sound decoder and TDS sugarcube speakers.
Cost of entry into the hobby
I thought that we had beaten this horse to death a while back, but then I came across this recent Youtube video by a fellow in the UK with what I think is a fairly good argument for the perceived decrease in younger model railroaders, at least in Britain.
A couple of questions:
Steam crane kit
Looking for a kit of a HO scale steam crane. Would prefer a crawler but car mounted would work also.

I am asking the MHR community for some help in solving a problem I created with my choice of layout scenery. My layout was originally conceptualized 25 yrs ago as a much smaller layout with no intention of adding a backdrop or anything like that. I started this current version with the old idea then expanded it because I had the room to do so. Although I do plan on adding a backdrop at some point, I didn't take this into consideration when I stuck with the basics of how I originally thought the scenery would look.

When I last posted I had just completed adding rocks to the newest section of my layout. I flew to CA for vacation on 12/27 and am still here now in LA on business until Feb. Of course that means I don't get to work on the layout but before I left I took a few more photos to share after I had colored all the remaining white plaster with Woodland Scenics earth pigment. It really makes a huge difference. Even without grass or trees the layout starts to look more realistic.
