New attic layout plans - folded HO dobgone with staging below

After some shuffling of bedrooms, it looks like I'll have a much bigger place to build a layout.  Going to go with a folded dogbone.  It's roughly 8x12.  It will include the switching layout I've already got started.  Although I might redo the benchwork to use something a little more sturdy.  The curved switch in the top left corner will wrap around the edge and connect to the lower level staging.  I think the upper level is finalized.  The staging level I need to get a way to turn a locomotive at least.

Airbrushing with Vallejo paints

I just airbrushed for the first time in over 10 years. I used my old Paasche H and Vallejo paints. I am very thankful that the Vallejo paint is idiot proof. My spray pattern wasn't the best. There seemed to be spurts of paint coming out rather than a smooth mist. Luckily the paint leveled and dried smooth and perfect. All seemed fine when spraying water and alcohol. I am suspect of two things. One is the tip and needle. They are old and the airbrush wasn't sitting in the best of conditions (an unheated garage) for several years and I see what I think is some corrosion.

The Grass is Always Greener

I spent the weekend laying down grass on a large portion of the layout.  I wanted very nice looking grass and I knew that ground foam was not going to cut it, yet I did not want to spend a ton of money on an expensive static grass applicator. Luckily I discovered a product from Scenic Express called "TuftGRASS".

Huntington Junction phase 3 - post construction thoughts

I've got my third phase benchwork complete and most of the track down.  Just one more turnout and a few lengths of flex and I'll have all of the mainlines in place and operational.  I've been running trains around the upper level and everything works great.  My EM-1 will easily pull all the cars I own up the grade without even breaking a sweat.  And with quite a few hours running now no derailments anywhere on the layout.

Campfire circuit

I am looking for a circuit to make at least 3 or 4 lights or LED's flicker to simulate a burning campfire.

The three lights must flicker independently.

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated,

Brian

Where have I been??

Hello all. I have been away from MRH much too long and away from my layout much too long. But life has been busy lately.

I have been giving a great deal of thought to how I am going to do convincing tracks in the street on the switching layout and after much doodling and drawing I think I have finally come to a plan. I have attached a drawing I think will explain it better than my words.

Brass Photo Etching; need advice and recommendations

I'm working on a scratchbuilt rail car that is complex enough that I'll need to make most of it from custom designed etched brass parts.

I'm using ProE CAD to design the components, and I'll be able to output the files in .DRW or .DXF format.

Here's the questions:

Does anyone have experience in this process as a hobbyist, and what vendors would they would recommend that will do small volume work for an individual?  (Versus a commercial production facility)  IE, an etching shop that understands modelers.

How to set up the Engine Start - Up procedure in a Bachmann N Scale SD45 with Sound Value on Board

I Recently purchased an N Scale Bachmann SD 45 with sound value (factory speced Sountrax Tsunami and my first n scale sound equipped loco): The sound and effects are really very good: The info in the quick start guide is very  limited as is the info on the Soundtrax website, particularly for a newbie to both DCC and Sound: I am trying to work out how to program the decoder to do the engine start up and shut down procedure as, with this model, as soon as you dial in the decoder number the motor sound starts on idle and ends with idle too : I have tried to Google help, also Bachmann, Sou
