June 22 Update

Trees came from SE today so worked on the layout this week to get ready for them. Did the major scenery work from Geldermans toward the the mountain, fences, flowers, trees, bushes, etc. Planted about 200 trees on the hill tonight, WOW a lot of trees, will finish up all the extraneous tuffs, bushes, etc I hope this week. Still have the foreground to do, part of an apple orchard, fence & horses from the old layout will move here.

Wiring a Custom Diamond Crossing

Hi I recently changed some of my trackage on my Free-mo Module Southwest Broom.

Boxcar Building Blitz (BBB)

As part of my continued avoidance of all things trackwork and electrical related I have started on a bulk modeling project.  My continuance down the backdating road requires that I add a significant number of 40 foot boxcars as these were still quite common into the early 1990's in northern Manitoba.  To that end I have started working on approximately 25 to 30 boxcars, predominantly Intermountain cars and Trains Canada cars and a smattering of Branchline and True Line Trains cars as well.

The S& N.E.s place in the world

I have had some reactions to my plans for the new layout. This has caused me to restate the back story for the S&NE. Firstly, I decided to produce a better map, including the real B&M and New Haven.

Train Masters Weathering Tutorials and my results

I used the weathering methods illustrated and explained by Gary Christensen and Mike Confalone in the Train Masters Videos and I now have weathered 2 box cars (no airbrush).  This is my second attempt. I bought a half dozen inexpensive freight cars off Ebay to practice on before trying to weather my nice stuff.  I certainly have room for improvement, but I am encouraged with the results so far.  I would like to give a big thanks to MRH, Gary and Mike for sharing their knowledge!

An Approach to Butt-Joining Rigid Insulation Foam

I decided a while back that I would use rigid insulation foam to support the scenicked (non-roadbed) areas on my layout (at least in the flat areas). I later decided to use 2" thick foam to match my spline roadbed's height without having to resort to shimming.  I'd previously tried stacking two layers of thinner foam and assumed (correctly, as it turned out) that the thicker foam would provide a more solid base between benchwork supports.

Operation

Not All of Us Operate in the Same Way

I have liked to operate on a model railroad most of my life. Unfortunately, for three decades I did not have a layout on which to operate. So, I operated from time to time on other folk's layouts. What I learned is that most people with a reasonable size layout operate their layouts as a somewhat large section of a railroad. They pride themselves on how many trains they can get over the road in a evening or day or operation. I learned that I never felt enough realism when operating in this way.

Spray booth

I see a lot of small spray booths on Ebay for under $100.00 & wondered if these are any good? See link to one of these.  http://www.ebay.com/itm/AW-Portable-Airbrush-Paint-Spray-Booth-Kit-Pro-Paint-Set-w-Turn-Table-Powerful-/262489769853?hash=item3d1d9c077d:g:maUAAOSwnNBXZhxj

Thanks!
