Pi SPROG One, ESU LokSound, and New to DCC Issues

Hi everyone,

I am a DCC newby and finally figured how to wire up my Proto 2000 SD-9 to my ESU Loksound Select Decoder. After making some programming adjustments and running the locomotive through it's functions for an hour, I ran over a misaligned turnout which appears to have scrambled my decoder. Now it continues to make some noises when track power is on but the throttle and functions are not functioning. I am trying to do a reset of the CV's using CV8 = 8 for ESU, but I cannot write the reset to the decoder in progrmming on the main mode or program mode.

A new book on early PA logging.

Pictures are from 8x10 glass plates. Slide 2 of a shay and 12 of a Barnhardt log loader are just great.

Be Careful What You Wish For

You think you want a large layout with regular ops sessions? Beware - layouts need regular care, and ops sessions just make it hungrier. If you want a little taste of what it's like to give a model railroad the care and feeding it needs, check out my latest blog post. Hope you're able to stop by!

Rapido RDC

Haven't noticed anyone showing off their new Rapido RDCs on here, so I thought I might show a few pics as my first two arrived today:

To All: Here is a recently installed sign on the layout. A round about tongue-in-cheek nod to DCC control. Photo by Elvin Howland. Yours, Elvin Howland/E. St. Louis Rail Group Layout.

Red, Yellow, Green LEDs

A few months ago there was information about a single LED with Red, Yellow and Green chips in one unit that could be used for Model railroad signals.  LEDBaron ( in Germany) and Mouser no longer list them on their web sites.  Does anyone know of a source?  They were available both with and without leads already attached

ESU Loksound and Decoder Pro on Mac odd behaviour

Hello I've found myself with a somewhat peculiar issue.

I have two locos that I equipped with ESU Loksound decoders.  I used the ESU Lokprogrammer to do the initial loading of sounds and set up as it works quite fast.

However for subsequent editing of speed curves etc I use Decoder Pro.  One of the tools I also use is the Bachrus Speedo, which allows me to measure the speed of each loco in scale MPH and get a graph of a loco. This is then used against a reference 'curve' to match the subject loco to.

Tsunami sound in an Athearn U50

I am thinking about buying an Athearn U50. They come with or without sound (tsunami). How good is the Tsunami sound in the U50? Does it sound like two diesels in one unit or just like one diesel? Is this a full Tsunami or a stripped down one specific to Athearn? Is there a better sound decoder available for a U50?

THI&E Freight Motor Build

After being lured into traction modeling by my brother, I am flirting with the idea of building a 2x4 traction module based on the Terre Haute, Indianapolis & Eastern, a precursor of the Indiana Railroad interurban system.

This blog will follow my attempt at building a THI&E freight motor from a LaBelle Woodworking Nikes Manufacturing freight motor kit.
