I decided to get back into the mix and review some laser cut wood kits. The first is a real nice craftsman kit. But as they say, don't take my word for it. See for yourself. In this video I review Carolina Craftsman kits version of the Plaisto Post Office.
The other post in the forum was supposed to be on my blog. Instead I will link that post here Carolina Craftsman kit build

Woodchip car in 3D
Hi all,
I'd like to share my latest project. I've been working on a 3D model of an FMC woodchip gondola, specifically a G-100-15/G-100-17. The design is based upon Rick Selby's article in the March 1992 Model Railroader.
Due to the lack of exact dimensions, I've had to "eyeball" many of the dimensions - especially placement. I would welcome any comments/constructive criticism on how I could improve the design.
Not bad for a month's work.
I guess it shows the benefit of thinking out an idea for a long time. Just a mere five weeks ago it was an unused basement corner, now it almost looks like a layout.
Then:
And now:
Splines almost done.
The splines are almost done. They still need to be sanded and re-leveled, but it actually looks like something resembling a railroad. You can see the 20" radius curves made using the form jig. They need to be cut and fit into place, too.
'The rolls of kraft paper have the full size track plans for reference as I put the splines in.

sign aging
Hi everyone. I have made some advertising decals on clear inkjet decal paper to apply to buildings for a 1800's diorama. I aged the wood using the "ink wash" but trying to work out how to 'age' the decals as well without damaging them. Any ideas? Thanks

Elemer's Foam Board with Cork as a scenic base material
I'm considering using Elemer's Foam Board with Cork as a scenic base material for my T-Trak-S corner modules. Foam board to be layered on top of 1/4 inch birch plywood top.
This is your usual foam board with one side foam and the other side very thin cork.
Elmer's Item 950180 (if interested on Amazon) comes in a 10 pack. Individual boards are 20 x 30 x 3/8 inch(s). Locally they are $5.99 each compared to $4.974, pack of 10 with free shipping.
I like the 3/8 thickness.
What material might hang slack like real cable?
The threads I have used to mimic cables on my ash dump and coaling tower do not hang straight up/down, and look goofy, bowed out and twisted. No way to put enough weight at the end without distorting the look. Does anyone have a different material that might work, or have I missed something in several trips to Hobby Lobby?

Operating session on the CGW
Yesterday I had another very enjoyable time operating on Jason Klocke’s Chicago Great Western. It truly is one of the most realistic layouts for both operations and scenic artistry. Jason is a keen observer of realism and he has the technique and skills to recreate an amazing representation of the CGW in miniature.

My wife can't believe that I am building structures!

No only do we have cows, we have buildings, people, junk, etc. I have never got this far before!
Doomsday
So, your club has been at the same location for 15 years.
3000 Sq feet of layout, hundreds of scenery products, half finished projects, extra track, member's lockers full of trains. Lots of stuff.
And the landlord says, I am bancrupt, your lease will not be renewed. I am selling the building. You have a year to move.
And the local real estate market is booming!
Now is when all the doomsday planning comes into play. The budget surplus, wiring segmentation, and module separation points.
