Ask Me How I Know!

I'm starting a little thread here, let's see how it goes... Give us a "Don't do it, EVER!" tip, and follow it with "Ask Me How I Know" (it doesn't have to be something you did, but even something you've seen happen, that should fall into the "just don't do it" catagory)

I'll start:

Nn3 FREIGHT CARS

All,

I have recently obtained several Nn3 Freight cars..Painted DATA  ONLY, D.S.P. & P. , R. G. S. etc , there has to be a way to change out the trucks to Standard Gauge? I am thinking of the DATA ONLY Freight cars.

Configuring Four Sugar Cube Speakers

Thanks for the suggestions on the previous blog on configuring three 16 mm diameter tablet speakers. I am applying some of those suggestions in this blog piece. The focus is installing three 13mm X 18mm X 13mm and one 11mm X 15mm x 12mm speakers each in two Athearn RTR diesels using recently unemployed Tsunami GN1000 decoders.

Photo Bucket replacement

I have decide to use https://imgur.com for hosting and sharing pics here and elsewhere.  To make it work on forums once you upload your picture, right click on the picture you want to place on the forum. When the menu opens , select copy image address. This is what you paste into the URL spot for sharing your pics..

Thank you Joe Fugate

Thank you Joe for allowing us to upload photos of our models and layouts to this forum. It seems Photobucket just broke the internet with their new policy. People who had free accounts with photos linked to forums are the ones affected. Now instead of the image being displayed, there is a user message from Photobucket.

Suggestions for Portable Task Lighting

I've been doing a fair amount of travelling for work recently and have begun, in the past year, taking models along to fill in down time hours.

Unfortunately, most hotels have mediocre to downright bad lighting around the tables / workspaces.  I'm therefore looking for a relatively compact task light with good, bright, diffuse lighting. Good color rendering is a plus, though less critical since I'm not doing any painting (I will be doing some powder weathering).

Any recommendations?

Touristy sign idea for Stonehammer

I'm thinking of making a sign that can be seen across the tracks from the depot identifying Stonehammer, The sign is a big sheet of rock. I'm trying to figure out if I can get white lettering on it somehow; decal? dry transfer decal? Might even print something from my printer, but haven't figured out how to make white lettering on a black background.

MTH PA/PB DC Conversion to ESU LokSound

The ESU website is an excellent resource for product information and installation assistance for the Select family of decoders. If you are using the LokProgrammer V4.0, you will find its support literature there, too.

The ESU LokProgrammer speeds the task as it employs macros to set some functions which otherwise would require multiple CV entry. Similar to Decoder Pro, which also works, it interfaces  through your computer once you make the easy connections and download the free software.

Tapering 3/16 wood dowels for log buildings and tree trunks

So i was jumped about how this is done by someone on facebook. So that being said, trying this method of tapering dowels can be dangerous, if you are not comfortable with power tools and your hands than this may not be for you. ( NOT OSHA APPROVED). I go thru a pair of gloves about ever 6 packages.THat does give me enough logs to do a few buildings. So the taper is from 16 inches scale on the but end to 10 inches scale at the top.
