How to open the shell on an MTH GP35 HO

A friend of mine had a DCC-Ready MTH GP-35 (HO scale) for a while, and I offered to install a DCC decoder in it since after all it's just a trivial task of inserting a 8-pin decoder in there (no sound needed). I mean, how hard can it be?

A New Beginning, Chapter 3

We are into phase 3 now. Brought home 2- 4x8 sheets of pink 2" extruded foam for use as the subroadbed. Also 10 pieces of 2x4 Masonite or tempered hardboard for the backdrop. 1 gallon of a nice sky blue and 1 gallon of an earth brown.

I strung the bus wires tonight from one end to the other so that's done before I set the foam in place. And before that's done the backdrop has to be painted and mounted on the wall. Retirement sure is fun!????

International Harvester Truck Plant, What Would I Find On The Rails?

Since I don't really have the room to build a large continuous running "dream machine", I'm thinking about a much smaller industrial switching layout that I can build into a corner of a spare room (HO).  I grew up in New Haven, IN, and Dad worked at the International Harvester Plant until he was laid off and the plant shut down (1980'ish).  I was about 9-10 then, but it's always been a lasting memory.  Though, like the plant itself, my memories of it are fading.  It seems to me this would make a perfect switching layout.  Plenty of material

Help With G scale sound

The proprietor of a local restaurant has a DC powered G train scale circling one of the rooms near the ceiling. He asked me for help when the train wouldn't run and I was able to track it to greasy wheels and track. After a thorough cleaning, the train runs OK.

He also has an MK-II Roanoke Electronics sound generator that appears to be 20+ years old which no longer operates. The unit is wired to external speakers. Is anybody aware of an inexpensive sound unit that makes appropriate steam train chuff, whistle, bell etc. sounds?

Brick mortar washes won't stay in the mortar lines

I have been experimenting with black washes, both ink/alcohol and thinned paint.  I have created solutions based upon articles and recipes in books and on MRH.  I have also tried a commercial weathering mix.  I am currently working with plastic kit pieces that are brick walls, painted with PolyScale Earth, which is a flat tan colour.

Which Craft Paints Are You Using for Weathering?

Rather than hijacking the craft paint article thread, I thought it best to start a new one.

I haven’t used craft paints for spraying yet, but after reading the article in this month’s issue, I will probably give it a try.  Awhile back, I spent a fair amount of time comparing color charts for the four main brands of craft paints mentioned in the article with color charts for floquil and scalecoat to compile a list of craft paints to use for weathering.

BL2 windows question...

So, I have a Proto 2000 undecorated BL2 that I plan to... well... decorate...

Anyway... my problem, is I haven't figured out the best way to remove the windows before painting.

The window is a single piece, that isn't cemented in, but it's in pretty tight... are there any tips, or secrets to this?

NS locos in NJ

Sadly, driving with no hands to spare for photo...

Saw NS locos in Manville NJ... White logo & horse on Black (all familiar)... lashed to Black logo & horse on silver-grey   Notably featuring "DC to AC" ... How would THAT work?  AFAIK, from the engine, the electrical setup is AC to the motors, or am I wrong (again)?

Kadee Greas-em

Has anyone have using this product for non-Kadee coupler purposes?

I'm thinking it may be useful to reduce the friction of my electrical pick-up-wipers on my TT's rail. Apparently, it is also a good conductor of electricity, but it just occurred to me it might not be feasible on a split rail set up, as the graphite may go on or between the gaps and cause a short.
