Modeling topic

Routing for cars.

Who or what determines the route a car will take? Did a railroad have much control to keep traffic on its lines and friendly connections?

Almost done redoing brass 0-8-0 project

My goal for this old 0-8-0 is to clean it up, weather it, paint the rods and rims of the drivers that have lost some paint over the years, and change the numbers on the cab that should not be there.

FREE Trees!!!

This is the time of year in New England and probably most of the USA that we should be harvesting all the free trees Mother Nature has given us. They are free for the picken. I’m no horticulturalist so don’t ask me the names of the weeds shown. I gather them while I’m photographing trains. Some of the best weeds grow along railroad tracks. I also use some of the flowers from the home landscape after they have dried up. A can of spray adhesive and some Woodland scenic foam can make some decent trees quickly. It took about two minutes to make the tree show.

Modeling from reality

Doug had an excellent point in another thread: let's base our modeling on reality, rather than tradition.

Interpret and portray it however you wish, and be aware of your choices.

I'll add that this includes making an independent judgement about scenery materials and other products labelled for specific scales.

Rubber Hoses and Layout Update Video

Hey everyone,

Here is a layout update and info on some material I found useful making some hoses for unloading corn syrup cars or any other tank/dry bulk cars.

enjoy,

Op session at night?

So, I hosted a couple sessions for the local Chicagoland RPM meet in Oct, but due to poor weather, distance, and maybe some mix-ups in signup, had no takers.  But some local guys came by to help host, and we ended up having a great time.

An early goal of the layout was to enable night lighting, and perhaps even operating at night.  With the addition of a few penlights, we actually did operate - nearly 1.5 hrs - and had a blast.  It's hard to photograph in the dark, but here's some photos.

Decal silvering: why some do, and some don't?

Like any good modeler, I gloss coated my model prior to decal application. I used rattle can Kryon 'gloss' and gave the entire car a nice coat of gloss. I let the gloss coat dry 24 hours before decal application.

I applied a variety of sizes of decals, various companies, age of decals unknown. Clear, white and yellow film depending on the decal.

Decal A. The one and only good one after a flat coat. The COTS and the "keep off roof" yellow decal also turned out without silvering.

Attention Randy Decker

Randy, nice conversation, enjoyed our phone chat. Since we talked about some of your present projects regarding your tribute layout I thought I would share this with you.

My SMA30 WiFi throttle software V1.0 PDF

I have attached a PDF file of my modified software for Geoff Bunza's SMA30 WiFi Throttle. I am calling this V1.0 for my PC&N Ry.

I have added a heartbeat feature to keep JMRI from disconnecting the throttle due to inactivity. Also, auto IP configuration for my two WiFI networks, Optional send track power on command to JMRI on power up.

I added a power off/dispatch throttle option that is activated by having the direction switch in Neutral and setting the speed step to 60 or greater.

Hope this may be of use to someone.

Soldering the LED leads to the small connector board on a Decoder Buddy

I’ve posted the routing of LED leads in the “Whats On Your Workbench?” as snipits.  This is slightly more involved so I’ll post it separately.

The first step was to solder a lead to the positive side of the small connector board.  Just like the decoder the hot wire goes to all the LEDs.
