Quality of engines

Just a simple question, but expect a lot of complicated answers. LOL If a person who has no knowledge whatsoever about HO diesels wants to buy a GP7 or GP9. And lets assume it is a PRR. Now: there's Athearn, Bachmann, Walthers, and who knows how many more. How would the decision be made? Price? Details? Running quality? decoder quality? Or buy a DCC compatible and what decoder? You see the dilemma? Yes, price may be a determinate factor, but how do you know you get the quality you expect for the price you pay?

British Citizens Moving in on the Layout'

We all  love our little people, and no layout can have to many too many of them.  Recently I discovered two companies in Great Britain, selling 3-D figures in several popular scales.  I ordered just a few from each company to see if I would like them.  Here are before and after photos.  Let me know what you think'.  I must add, I received them from England, in just a few days after ordering them...

Wiring Between Individual Units, sound & DCC installations, primarily steam engines

Pros and cons of wiring up DCC & sound installation in primarily HO steam locomotives?

Are there good reasons that one might elect NOT to put dis-connectable plugs in the wiring of steam engines with their tenders. In some cases it seems like just another area to cause connection problems down the road? And if one was concerned about separating the two at a later date (for selling/shipping/etc) couldn't they just get a longer box?

Removing capacitor from Bachmann Spectrum 4-4-0

I have three relatively recent HO Bachmann Spectrum 4-4-0s.  In each I removed the factory decoder and put in a TCS WOWSound decoder and speaker.

Two of the three run fabulously well.  The third is very jerky, particularly at slow speeds.  I encountered the gentleman from TCS at a recent meet and he suggested the problem could be a capacitor across the motor terminals.

How to laser cut a "bricks on edge" window opening

I've wanted to build my childhood home for years and was hoping to have it laser cut by a good friend with a laser.  A problem area is at the bottom of the window ledge where the bricks are on edge and slightly slanted downward.  Is there a way to do this?  I guess separate pieces could be made for those edge on bricks.  Any ideas?

Mail order versus hobby store

Retail in the US has been going through a transition for awhile and will continue to for the foreseeable future. There are quite a few mall construction projects that have been put on hold or are in the “rethinking mode” across America, even in this so called great economy. E-commerce has had a major part in this decision making.

Making the Great, Greater

Making the Great, Greater

No one will argue the incredible detail and quality of any of the Scale Trains offerings. I have only one so far but that is due to we always seem to be packing and unpacking for a move. And to a smaller house. I think this downsizing thing is un-American, but I digress. I bought the DCC-ready version which incorporates a 21 pin style decoder receptor in the mother board.

More to follow.

Flextrack not stuck to caulk?

I notice that one of my  spur tracks has about a foot of flextrack that has popped loose from the acrylic caulk. I've never had this problem before and usually have to use a knife blade under the ties to get flextrack loose from the caulk. I weighted it when installing and it looked fine at the time so I'm wondering what went wrong. Anyone else seen this happen? I'm wondering if the caulk was old or perhaps the flextrack had some mold release or other slippery surface contaminate?
