Summer 2020 Update

Hello friends,

It's been awhile between updates, but I've been making slow progress on my Erie Western / Chicago & Indiana circa 1979.

More details and pics to follow...

Santa Fe M.O.W. Consist on a Budget

I was starting to think about modeling a (partially) prototype-inspired Santa Fe 1950's M.O.W. consist using older '70's equipment (aka Athearn, AHM, Tyco, etc), starting with what I have on hand.

This photo appears to be older than the period I want to model, judging by the paint scheme of the crane.  However it gives me a general idea of where I'm going.

MEMS speaker technology advances - Sound in N and Z scale coming?

I just read an article on new speaker technology that is able to produce simpler, smaller and lower energy speakers. I'm excited to see how that could bring sound to N and Z scale locomotives amongst other potential uses on our layouts.

Building the bog

I'm venturing into new territory now with an attempt at some scenery, my first try at any sort of serious scenery.  I'm building a photo diorama to shoot some models on as well as to test some scenery techniques.  I wanted to try and capture a northern Canadian Shield view along a boggy body of water with a photo backdrop behind that I could change out to switch up the view a bit.

Going big with kitbashing

Greetings! Extra modeling time on our hands can pay big dividends on the workbench. We needed a means of hiding some upper-deck benchwork supports in the town of Berrian Vista on our 1927-vintage Sugar Pine Lumber Company layout and a large, semi-flat-profile background industry would fit the bill. We're aiming for a woodworking industry, some type of wood products factory such as furniture, millwork, barrels or whatever, and it started life as two Edison's Menlo Park Laboratory kits, part of the Greenfield Village series.

A Place I Will Likely Not Get To...

Hopefully the attachment is done correctly.

The Spiral Tunnels of Canadian Pacific RR is a place I'm considering doing on the layout.  I am undecided as to where on the layout I can best do this.  The location of the diagram below is familiar to anyone who has been here or has the diagrams sent previously.  Field is Newport.
