Paint Thining Question

The various formulas for making a thinner all call for a small amount of retarder. What would happen if you don't use the retarder? Is there something else you can use?

Project Organizer

Hello all,

Here is a photo of a project organizer I built towards the end of last year (2020) to help me be better organized when it comes to the many modeling projects that I have. (For some reason the projects seem to multiply)

When I get more time I'll post more photo's as a how-to on this project.

Stay tuned.

Paint rail with paint pens?

I'm trying to color the rails on my track with a Woodland Scenic paint pen but on seem to get the side of the rail head and not the web. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to modify the tip of the pen?

MRH: We retitled this thread to make it work better for searches. The old title was too vague.

MEC history lesson needed

greetings and I am hopeful that this request is placed in the right area.

Do model manufacturers just make up freight car examples?

While there's so much about my prospective railroad that doesn't hold up to even slight prototype-type scrutiny and while I'm not worried about rivets and obscure details, I'm trying to avoid the most glaring fabrications. Thus, trying to gave freight cars that generally "look" the real part.

Tom Johnson: Question about your trees

I am at the point on my layout where it is time to make trees. The modeled season is early November and the setting is central Connecticut. I model the New Haven RR in 1948. I've used a photo backdrop and I would like the trees to match that same look and feel.

How Replace Mantua Locomotive Headlight??

This is my first attempt at upgrading a steam loco – specifically a Mantua 2-8-2.

Before I took the loco apart, it did run successfully on my layout.  However the headlight did not work.  When I opened up the loco, there was one wire from the motor to the front of the “shell” (see pics).  The wire was only holding by 1-2 threads, and it broke shortly thereafter.  The “shell” is one solid piece of metal, weighing in at 14.4 oz.

Joints in Fascia

I use 1/8 in hardboard for my fascia.  I use plastic trim pieces designed for joining paneling or shower enclosure material to join the fascia pieces.  That covers the joint to provide a finished look.

The Maryland Midland gets a farm and a forest.

One thing that was noticed immediately by this transplanted Nevadan was how many farms, churches and trees there are in Western Maryland.  I decided I needed a farm scene and some forest for the trains to run though.  On my layout the forested areas function as scene dividers between relatively prototypical scenes that are way too close together.  So here is the latest areas to have scenery on my Maryland Midland Railroad.
