One thing that was noticed immediately by this transplanted Nevadan was how many farms, churches and trees there are in Western Maryland.  I decided I needed a farm scene and some forest for the trains to run though.  On my layout the forested areas function as scene dividers between relatively prototypical scenes that are way too close together.  So here is the latest areas to have scenery on my Maryland Midland Railroad.

D%20farm.jpg Since I own a John Deere tractor it was essential that this farm have some green farm equipment.

20forest.jpg Here is that same train exiting the forest area scene divider.  It will cross a creek and enter Union Bridge yard.

%20scene.jpg This photo shows the entire area of the layout that I have been working on as well as the bridge and creek area on the left to be completed next.  It also show my hard working robot vacuum on the floor who tirelessly cleans up my many messes.  I had a non-modeler visitor this weekend who asked what the black box was on the fascia, thinking it was something electronic.  He went crazy when I told him it is to hold my beer while running trains.

Nice Looking Scene

It could use some critters.

Your comments about moving from NV to Maryland remind me of 2 incidents in my own life. 1st was big city kid fresh out of HS got to visit a farm in Idaho and it was an eye opener. Critters everywhere and was I safe from all that farm life? LOL

The 2nd was when Wife and I moved out of southern CA to MN and that 1st spring, it was so green and I was way used to gray and brown.

Anyway back to your RR, that's why I made the comment about critters. It does make for a great scene break though in-between places and it looks a lot like a lot of places I have seen around the country.

I really like

The colors of your scenery and the undulating ground level. Very realistic and attractive.

HO scale farm equipment

I've found it hard to find good, relatively modern farm equipment in HO scale. Unfortunately, most farm equipment models seem to be 1/64th scale. But it is interesting that it is easier to find American farm equipment in HO from vendors in the United Kingdom.  You would think that there would be lots available here, but not that I've seen. Now there's a lot of models of European farm equipment. When it comes to implements, it can be even worse.

By the way, not all farms have animals. My late father-in-law raised row crops, and his son raised feed crops, cattle and hogs. Now he's retired and rents out acreage to folk who want to be farmers.

Another thing, my brother-in-law is a 1:1 scale guy, MoPac variety.  I'm thinking of donating some train stuff to his grandchild and let him go help build him a basic layout.

I grew up in the era of most (relatively) small acreage farmers having free ranging (didn't have a name back then) chickens and some cattle, and perhaps a horse or two for the kids.

Nice farm & transition

Nevin, really nice transition area there including the farm and adjoining forest. Having the trains run behind some of the trees is a pleasing effect.

Very nice. I like seeing the

Very nice. I like seeing the train come out of the wooded area.

I'm old enough to remember farm houses like that.

The corner doesn't look like the corner of a layout; good job.

farm scene

Great farm scene.   I remember farm scenes from my New York youth days.   I like the big trunked tree in foreground.   Would you tell me who makes them

Corner

Thank You for the update pic's.

Nice looking corner project.

Best kept secret:  Cheaper price on 1/64 and 1/87 scale vehicles at local implement dealer.

Much better price with no shipping costs.

Some info for more farm equipment,  Try checking with local John Deere, Cat. and others that sell scale replicas.

Bought some locally from dealers here in OKC. OK.

Not polite to b**** about the price of food with your mouth full!

Good mix of colors and blending.

Really nice scenes, look forward to more progress. Inspires me for my own projects.

I think this looks terrific!

I live in Ohio, and this scene definitely has the right feel for farms and forests.  I drive through areas EXACTLY like this every day.  Well done!

I also love that you have a beer when running trains.  I have a beer when painting clouds or installing trees and such.  It relaxes my left brain and makes things more random and creative.  I always like the outcome.

Farm Animals

Arizona Gary is right about not all farms having animals.  However, for me, I think every barn needs a couple of cats for mouse control and and a couple of dogs to protect from unwanted visitors -- both humans and varmints.

Got some animals yesterday

I purchased some chickens, cats and dogs yesterday so the farm will be populated.  I have some rancher people from my previous 1915 western layout, they look wildly out of place.  I need to find some modern farmers.
