Progress continues on the Colorado Front Range Railroad.

1) Results of my test running diesel locomotives versus steam locomotives pulling up the ruling grade. Maybe not what you expected my Broadway Limited 2-10-2's vs SD9's
The winner pulled 6.4 lbs up the 1.2% grade (with a curve)

2) John got much of the electronics figured out to this week including our block detectors.

3) Sean got a little more track laid and the entire sub roadbed for the yards in Denver.

answer to the blog question and problems that I posted early:

Resurrection of the streamline era - scratchbuilt locos

Maybe my studies and job - both dealing mainly with aerodynamics, streamlining etc. - caused my interest in streamlined rolling stock. So I scratchbuilt several prototypes of the 30's to late 50's (ok, some exceptions going into the 70's) in larger scales.

what should I put over plywood

I am just getting started in the hobby I have set up a piece of plywood for the start, what should I put on top of this that would allow me to put in scenery , that is fairly inexpensive due to being on a fixed income Or is the plywood ok to plant scenery on

Middle school model RR: a new year

Since Labor Day the month of September has been jammed with activity as the new school year gets underway. Until last Wednesday, none of that activity involved the model railroad.

Sugar Cane layout by Jack Luyt this one has animation.

I found this one while looking at videos for HOn3 layouts.  This is very well done.  He models the tropics very well.

Penn Lake 8 Control Panels (Update 11/18/17)

Been playing with some ideas for control panels for Penn Lake version 8. The panels represent towers controlling each interlocking or group of linked interlockings.  I haven't decided yet whether to group all the panels together as shown here or split them up, with each panel near its tower.

Fabric or paint for table top

I am a real novice as my father, who has passed away, built the original 4X8' table top.  I am now enlarging to 6X10' a new table top (new plywood) for my son who is handicapped.  His old layout had green felt over plywood as a table top. I can't locate felt and someone suggested I use an awning fabric or paint the plywood.  Any suggestions?

This will be a simple layout no hills.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Lead Weights as a building aid

I posted about these on another topic and some one asked for more details so here goes.   They are made from pieces of aluminium 1" x 1" square section tube cut in my case to lengths of either 100mm (4") or 200mm (8").

Another new technology called 3D Doodler

Here is another new technology taking the art scene by storm.  Now to just figure out a use for it in model railroading.  See what you think.

There are a lot of videos about this on YouTube.  It is currently available at Michael's stores.
