DCC Decoder board for 3 Servos and 1 Relay

I have really enjoyed working with the Arduino / DCC projects that Geoff has started on the forum and was inspired to design a printed circuit board to simplify construction of the DCC Decoder circuit.

The board that I have had made supports three servos and one DPDT relay.  In addition there is a small prototype area where other components can be added.

I have put a video and other information about it on my web page at:

Just taking a look. Roco Z21 overview.

Below I am posting some videos of the Roco Z21 and the z21.  This is a use of a technology in a new way.  This has some good discussions by a hobby shop owner.  For you guys who want knobs see part two.

NRE Genset with MRC Sound Decoder

I have 2 NRE Gensets with MRC sound decoders. My issue is they start up way too fast going forward. Right when I get to speed step 1 its already going too fast. Reverse is fine. I tried dabbling with CV's 2 thru 4 ( Start voltage , acceleration/deceleration) but without success.

What is kick start voltage and how can I either eliminate or prolong the time frame that the engine shuts down and restarts from idling mode ?

Rapid Prototyping lecture

Rapid Prototyping (3D printing) is a popular topic here so I thought I'd mention this.  If you happen to be in the Hillsboro, OR area on September 29 there is a presentation about Rapid Prototyping as used by Laika Studios in their stop motion movies.  While not train related, I'm sure it will be an interesting presentation about RP applications as Brian and his crew push the current limits of the technology.

Using 3D printing for collaboration & prototyping

With all the talk of 3D printing for the purpose of building finished models, I thought it might be interesting to show another use.  I'm working with another modeler to develop a boiler and cab (which will presumably be 3D printed) for a Florida East Coast 4-6-2, better known today as Savannah & Atlanta #750.  While I work on the boiler, he's working on the chassis, drive, cylinders, etc.  In order to make sure that our parts will fit together, I suggested he have this model printed:

Which Solder Station?

This country boy is in the big city tomorrow and I'll have a chance to pick up a soldering station.

top contender is the Weller WES-51 on for $112 CDN,

or is the wcc100 good enough - only $49.  Is it good enough or should I cough up that extra $63?

the also ran is a Hakko - X888D-23BY for $99  this one is digital?

Will get a couple of extra tips whichever one I buy.  finer the better.

Background painting

Some of you guys will remember that I tried my hand at painting to see if I could produce an acceptable backdrop for my Richlawn Railroad.  I wasn't able to produce the quality I wanted so I ended up using a printed backdrop by Backdrop Junction which I really like.  Although I couldn't get the results I wanted, I got bitten by the "painting bug".  Over the years I've enjoyed watching painting shows like Bob Ross and his "wet on wet" technique using oils.  I purchased some how-to painting videos by painter Wilson Bickford along  with

Lettering position help

Hello!  I am finalizing the company image for my freelanced railroad, the Spring City & Northern (SPRG), and am looking for your opinion.  Here are two versions of the lettering.  SPRG 405 on top with the lettering straight across the top, and SPRG 404 on the bottom with the lettering stacked.  Which do you prefer?  The SPRG is set in southern Wisconsin, circa 1995, and most of the rolling stock in company paint will be hoppers.  Although a good chunk of them will be all gray instead of the blue and gray.
