My results with LED layout lights.

There has been a lot of discussion about layout lighting lately, and many people have suggested using LEDs.  I finally decided to give it a try, after reading a number of positive comments.  Catching a great sale at www.hitlights.com, and combining an order with some lights to go beneath our kitchen cabinets, made the price pretty reasonable.

What to run?

As I proceed with building the Hudson Bay Railway Flin Flon Subdivision I have been formulating a rough operating scheme for the layout, essentially what to run on the layout to give it a purpose.  Running trains “just because” is fine but I am getting more involved with local layouts that are operations based and I find that aspect of the hobby very interesting.

Do I cut them now, or later?

I need some advice, folks.  I'm about to install four strips of LED lights on my new layout.  Three of them can be installed in a single piece, and the fourth is going to be pieced together out of the leftover pieces.  The layout they are going on is built in two pieces, with the idea of eventually (some time in the next 5 years, hopefully) moving into a new home, and taking the layout with us.

CCT caboose windows?

Anyone seen these type of CCT caboose windows up close?

http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=20694

I'm trying to figure out how to model them (and exactly what they are?) They look like they might be fixed screens or perhaps some kind of replacement windows? Screens make more sense given the valley temperatures in Lodi :>)   If anyone has any ideas let me know and if anyone is going to Portola one  CCT caboose is in their collection so please take a good look........DaveB

Fast Tracks kits

I am considering buying a Fast tracks system to build dual gauge turnouts. This is an expensive item $430. Two reasons I am considering this. The first is I need at least 12 and maybe 15 dual gauge turnouts, and the cost to buy Shinahora turnouts is about $40 a piece and they don't seem to offer any turnouts that allow a single gauge to emerge as when only one or both gauges are diverging. Any input from those that have used them and the time per turnout would be appreciated.

Transfer Terminal Kitbash: Beginning to come together

The walls are together, and mostly detailed -- there are still some signs to compose and print, and some delicate pipes that will have to wait almost until final assembly. Also, the east-end dock and canopy has to be built. I set it up with tape to determine the final position on the baseboard:

Spectrum Ho DCC 45 Ton Switcher

This is My Spectrum 45 Ton Switch Engine, Ho Scale with DCC but without Sound. If You have added sound to one of these please let Me know how You did it. Decoder, and size of speaker and any modifications You had to make. I want to add sound but would prefer to just add it to the existing DCC if possible.

DCC Booster

I have an NCE PowerCab setup. I am interested in a little more power. Can I use the Tam Valley 5 amp booster board in district mode for a down and dirty solution?
