How do you achieve a realistic look for cinders?
I am in need of a good method or product for representing cinders in and around the steam loco shops areas on my HO layout.
The Woodland Scenics product is too black, I glued it in place, and found it so dark that I came back and hit it with my airbrush and, if I recall, Polly Scale UP dark gray paint. The dark gray is about the right color, but now the cinders just look exactly like what they are... spray-painted dark cinders. Ugh.
I am looking for what I would call a dark gray with some hint of brown.
Thanks for your ideas!

HOW TO use a swivel knife in an actual model railroading project
Has anyone seen an article or video of HOW TO use a swivel knife in an actual model railroading project. I know they are used in leather making but I don't see how to use them in Model Railroading. I heard that they are used in Model Railroading though.
Thanks

My second free downloadable Calendar for 2015: Colorado Narrow Gauge
Just like my US-Diesel calendar, here comes the one for the narrow gauge and steam buffs. I like to share my free downloadable calendar available at my modellcom-blog. Sorry, but the site is only in german, but you may use the translation function to get a little idea about what is going on there (railroads, real and model and cardmodeling).
Frustrated with painting rail.
I have painted and weathered a lot of rail over the years, but for some reason I can't make paint stay on my peco code 83 rail on the edge of the head above the web of the rail. I cleaned the rails like I always do and tried floquil oil based and non oil based paint and pens, but still no success. However painting the ME code 70 rail's head edge, it stays on.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Looking for recent magazine article
Sometime in the past year there ws an article on kitbashing a Walthers McGraw Oil business. Maybe a conversion to an ethanol company? The McGraw kit is 4 vertical tanks with a concrete catch basin around it. The article halved it to two tanks and bashed the concrete basin to hold just the two tanks.
Does this sound familiar to anyone? I don't need the article, just the issue/date. I was thinking MR. Thanks.

Foam or Homasote
I am going to start on my staging area soon. It is in another room separate from the layout. What should I use for the base, foam such as the rest of the layout or should I use plywood topped with Homasote? I would not think noise in another room would be a bother or would it? Plywood w/Homasote, should I use cork on save the expense for the layout proper ? I feel lucky that the real estate owner, a.k.a. wife and CEO, granted me the space. Your opinions please.
CAD for structures
Currently, my layout is in the planning stages and I have completed the track plan using XTrackCAD 4.0.3a
I am looking for a CAD program for a MAC running OSX 10.10 so that I can produce designs of all the structures for my layout. Ultimately, the stored designs will help generate a parts list and 2D drawings for when I get the time to build the models.
What CAD programs are currently being used?
I figured out what Walthers Goo actually is.
I had to replace the thermostat in my car a while back. Someone recommended Permatex Super High Tack Gasket Sealant #80060 for the thermostat gasket. I'm pretty sure that stuff is Walthers Goo. Same color, same texture, same smell, both claim the same maximum temperature, both have the same instructions for use and the same cure times, etc, etc, etc. It is the exact same stuff. Only difference is it costs about 25% less for twice as much and is available at the Auto Zone a few blocks from my house.

Figuring out dispatching for a single operator layout
Hi all,
I'm working out operations for my Bradford Valley Lumber Co. layout, and there's something on which I'd like advice.
The layout, like my previous ones, is designed for one person to operate. Like my previous layouts, I'm planning to use 4-cycle waybills with car cards for car forwarding.
