Turntable resurrection

I had an old Diamond Scale turntable bridge and spur gear salvaged from a layout many years ago. The original hydrocal pit was long gone so I decided to make a new one from wood. I spoke to Nils at Diamond Scale and he is sending be the worm gear and a few other odds and ends. Here's a couple of progress pics:

Spacing tool for parallel mainlines?

I'm curious what folks use to maintain consistent spacing between parallel mainlines - tool, eyeball, straightedge or ???

Thanks.

3rd PlanIt Demo

Help! I just installed the 64 bit demo version of 3rd PlanIt (ver 10) and there are no libraries on my computer. Is this a limitation of the demo version, or did the install fail? Any help is appreciated. Thanx.

IAIS's West End - New power, new bridge

Over the 14 years I've been following the IAIS, I've gone to great effort to confine my modeling strictly to my chosen era, both to focus my efforts as well as to limit my hobby spending.  A friend has even jokingly (?) referred to me as "heartless" due to choices I've made to part with equipment that doesn't fit my timeframe.

Battery Powered Rubber Band Drive HOn30 Railtruck

How fast will a rubber band drive go. Here's a possible answer to that question. The motor is a 6 volt gear drive running on 2 1.5volt Nicad batteries.

Enjoy

Decisions! Decisions - Which Plan?

In one of my recent posts ( http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/18971 ) I shared a track plan I was working on for a new layout I'm hoping to build after I finish tearing my current layout down. Many readers gave helpful suggestions that made the track plan much better than I had originally designed. Since then I've made a few minor tweaks, but nothing real significant.

Distance of platform from railhead?

How far from the edge of an elevated passenger platform to the outer edge of the closest rail ? I need to know so I can space my 1:1 track properly on the outside of my train building. CL line of tracks would also do. Thanks!

Haleiwa Hotel

Haleiwa Hotel

I am really excited about adding a hotel to the branch and found some great pictures for inspiration. The bad news is that O scale is so damned big. The image below might better be on the backdrop OR I just attach the big lanai to the photo at a slightly smaller scale (1:64?) with people inside to give a 3-D effect.

favorite part of the hobby

What parts of the hobby do you love and which parts do you hate (or like the least)?  Looking at recent posts, particularly “What’s on your work bench” and Rob’s post about rebuilding an older Geep. It appears: Rob enjoys rebuilding older models. Dick hates wiring and I enjoy building wooden kits.

Anybody had etchings made?

I throw this out there even though I've seen Rob Teed noted a system to etch circuit boards. Hawaii is a hard place to get enchant or actually chemicals of any kind.

Below is a guardrail detail from the Private car of the Oahu Railway and Land Company built for the creator B.F. Dillingham. Are there companies that can reproduce this from a scale drawing or would you attempt it at home?
