Death of a loco due to gear failure; is there a real remedy?

With the number of locomotives that have suffered gear failures of one kind or another (I'm particularly sensitive to failures in Bachmann geared locomotives) I got to wondering if anyone has ever come across a way to have replacement gears fabricated that would not cost one's first-born.  NWSL has done a terrific job of trying to address some of these problems but in some cases have had to step away (the Bachmann HO Shay bevel gears are out of production) leaving no alternative I know of but the good will of the original manufacturer (which also expires).  There have been

Interesting idea for a small power sander

Stumbled on this Youtube video and was amused at the possible use of a battery-operated toothbrush I just happen to have in my toiletries travel bag...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_H9FI4sZwPM

Would also like to see MRH add a separate forum for tools; general modeling is OK but a separate forum would allow a more representative grouping.

Pictures of a neat Twin Cities HO GN layout

Last Saturday I had the pleasure of visiting a neat, HO double deck, Great Northern layout here in the Twin Cities. Attached are a few photos I took that while not showing a train did illustrate some great, midwest scenery and techniques to simulate continuing a road into a backdrop, a lake side scene and a few industries.

Enjoy,

Barry

Who do you use to host your pictures? I have used Photobucket but not in well over a year.

Are there other options?

Can somebody take a look at this switching arrangement ...

First let me apologise for the poor quality of my diagram. I can't work out how to do straight lines on the drawing software I've got. Hopefully I can explain myself.

gauge issue with Microengineering code 70 turnout

I have one of my Micro Engineering code 70 turnouts that has a very tight gauge through the area wher the points are.  It appears that the rail in this area has come loose from the ties and flexes inwards.  Does anyone have any suggestions as to how best to fix this?  The actual switch is (of course) soldered into its location so will likely have to come out unless someone has a suggestion on how to do the fix in place.  Any help appreciated.

Museum Of Science and Industry Items Being Auctioned Off

I have some news that the Museum of Science and Industry here in Chicago has some items being auctioned off. I am actually quite disappointed at this as they have been there since they opened (I believe). Below are photos of the items and links to the websites. I am not sure what everyone else thinks about this though in my opinion i don't think it should happen. (not that I know what we could do)

Kadee detail parts

Does anyone have experience of the Kadee boxcar ladders in HO? I've been using the Details Associates ones to dress up cars, but wonder how easy the KD ones are to install.

Thanks!

Switching Greenfield Ethanol with JMRI

Over the past month I've done some experimenting with JMRI and feel comfortable with most of the programs' operations features, however, I've hit a small snag developing a switch list for the Greenfield Ethanol portion of my layout.

All moves within the plant will be conducted by a track mobile. A local will set-out and pick-up cars on track GE3.

Curtains

Hey guys,

I wonder how to make good looking curtains? Is there some good technique?

Thanks and cheers,
