Gold Spike Trains on the LaMesa Model Railroad Club

The LaMesa Model Railroad Club in San Diego opened the entire mainline from Bakersfield to Mojave on Aug 29, 2015 after 25 years of working towards this goal. This is about 1,000 feet of new track. The event was celebrated by a Gold Spike ceremony at Tehachapi Summit with a meet between Gold Spike Specials from the AT&SF and the SP. The Santa Fe steamer is 3892 and is the oldest engine on the roster at 50 years of age. It was the first engine owned by one of the club founders and designer of the railroad, Tony Anderson.

Titchy Train Reefer Build

Well I decided to tackle a Tichy Pacific Fruit Express kit. I've accumulated a couple of these from EBay buys.

The Kit looks to have quite a few parts and looks fairly detailed. So we'll see how this adventure works out.

How did you attach your brass sand tower?

Attached is a photo of an Overland brass sand tower. I've made some notations on the picture.

May question concerns attaching the tower to the layout.

That flat metal base plate is to be removed. I can't seem to get my head around how to hold that tower in place and steady. If I could find a screw long enough, I'd like to put a washer under the layout and insert the screw up through the layout and attach it that way. Seems like overkill though.

Any thoughts on how others got this thing installed on their own layout?

Operating Florida City

Just read Somewhere Southwest post of operations. I thought I would post how I operate my FEC Florida City shelf switching layout.

Improving Code 83 Atlas Turnouts

Has anyone tried to improve the look of HO scale Atlas Code 83 custom-line and super-track turnouts by removing the plastic over the frog and electrically isolating it with separate power for DCC?

I have both custom-line and super-track #6s on my layout and I'm no longer a fan of the plastic looking frog. As far as I can tell there is metal rail under the plastic as there is a slight change in elevation over the frog due to the plastic coating.

Magnet interference with DCC signal

I am building a swinging gate for my setup which runs on DCC. I have to get power from the bus to the tracks that are on the top of the gate.  I want the power automatically provided and shutoff when the gate closes and opens.

In order to connect from the bus to the track that is on the gate, I would like to use the kind of magnet latches that are used to keep cabinet doors closed.

Kingsbury Ave done

Kingsbury Avenue, all 9 feet of it, is paved from one end to the other. What a project this was! Fitting all the pieces into each turnout was the most difficult part. Good thing I made templates of all 3 sections. That made it much easier. Still tedious, but easier. Now to do some weathering on the surface. Add some manhole covers. Tar patches. Small potholes, etc, etc.

I need a picture of D&H U33c 751-753

I am modeling the former EL U33c's that D&H HURRIEDLY repainted, by covering the maroon with blue and pattching out the heralds. I have many good shots of the locos, but none of the rear, so I don't know what was done there. I know the rear remained yellow, but, don't know if or what herald was applied. Can anybody help?
