Bead Blasting Brass
There have been a number of posts about cleaning brass for painting. This caboose looks terrible with bad tarnish and gunk and I got it for a song on eBay. The area that is clean is the result of 2 minutes of bead blasting. Note the nice etch it produces to help the paint adhere. One caution though. Once complete, you need to seal the surface with something as all that nicely etched brass will start tarnishing right away as there is nothing between it and the air.
Temporary ballasting?
Not sure if I wrote about it, but I'm working on a temporary shelf switcher (about 13.5 ft X 1.5 ft), 1-inch foam on a couple hollow core doors, tacked to a ledger board with 2x3 "feet", until I can get started on a new layout room in my basement.
I am not caulking down any track or using roadbed - tracks sit on the foam. (Yes, I know all about the Holy Wars over foam, cork, Homasote, noise, yadda, yadda, yadda.)
Buckling Track problems
Here's a new one for me.
I am building the layout in a finished / heated / AC basement. Track is Code 83, Shinahora that is lightly glued with Phenoseal and track spikes added. Rail joiners are NOT soldered. Switches are not glued.
Average temp in the basement runs about 60 to 70 degrees, with winter temps running about 64 degrees constant in the basement. Humidity runs about 65% average, although I noticed on the cold days here in the Northeast it went down to about 45-50%.
Short Circuit Protection for NCE SB5/5A Booster
I am not very knowledgeable when trying to manage the electrical aspect of my layout I am building. With that said, I just purchased an NCE SB5 booster to use with my Power Cab system. What is the best way to set up some type of short circuit protection system to keep the booster from from burning out? Are there alternatives instead of using NCE EB1 or CP6 circuit breakers? Also, any information on how to set up such a system would be helpful.

Fascia Color - First post on returning to work on the layout
Hi all,
Just checking on what people use for fascia colors. I originally was going to go with black for a theatrical vignette look. However, a lot of the 'guys' on the proto-list have gone with a green(ala CTC panel green that Joe Atkinson uses) Not a fan of that color however, so going with a bolder green. Looking to match the original IC green diamond emblem color. The attached picture looks a lot lighter than in person due to room lighting and flash, so assume a medium/slightly dark green.

Bachmann 4-4-0 Domes
I've got a couple HO scale Bachmann "modern" 4-4-0 steam locomotives, one operable, and the other basically a parts donor. I'd like to swap the steam and sand domes between the locos. I tried gently twisting one off the donor loco, but it didn't want to budge. Does anyone know whether they are glued on or simply a friction fit? Or are they secured by a screw inside the boiler (I haven't disassembled either loco yet)?

Is it prototypical practice to pass industries?
Is it prototypical for a mixed consist train en route to a classification yard to pass customers that may be receiving some of those cars? Meaning would the railroad sort those cars for delivery in the yard first or would they know in advance that those cars need to be placed and just spot them where necessary? Here's why I ask:
Decoder failures
Recently I brought some big engines out of storage to run in the club (my shelf layout is suitable to switchers, not 6 axle engines like my C44-9W or SD70ACe). Both locomotives are athearn and are fitted with Tsunami sound decoders. On the club the locomotives did not move. Both were responsive to DCC comands, turning lights on and off, bell, horn, prime mover sounds and all. Today I disassembled them and tested both with a multimeter. The motor outputs in both decoders were zero, even at full speed (I had removed the worm gear and shafts so no mechanical binding could happen).
