Analog on DCC

stole this from another post

If "analog", I wouldn't put it on any form of DCC-powered track, as a matter of principle.

It is possible that by setting the Digitrax system to "00" you may have invoked the hybrid "Zero Bit Stretching" mode, which is a motor-cooking way of faking-out the DCC signal so it appears capable of driving a single analog loco...

Anyone in South Bend, IN area interested in forming round robin group?

Dying to get out of the armchair and find others who need mutual help and inspiration in getting their model railroads built.

Power Districts

What is the best practice for setting up power districts?

Is it better to have all your circuit breakers mounted next to and connected near the booster and then the bus wiring run out from each circuit breaker?

Or is it best to run a bus wire from the booster around the layout and just connect your circuit breakers into the bus wire as needed along the layout?

Scale: HOn3

Layout: 20' x 20'

DCC System: NCE SB5 Smart Booster

Bus wire: 12 gauge stranded

Feeder wire: 20 gauge solid

Alternative to Caboose Industries turnout ground throw

Last year I saw discussion of another type of turnout ground throw I would like to try.  IIRC, it was metal vs. the plastic type that Caboose Industries has.

Can anyone post the name/company so I can look those up?  I'm going to need some for my yard which will mostly make use of manual ground throws.

Cheers, Jim Fitch

Invisible Blogs

Just curious as to why some Blogs don't show up in either the "Blogs" list or "Recent blog posts" but are visible in "Recent posts by type".  Some classic examples are:

Weathering with Mike Confalone: Project 4-SCL covered hopper

In the first of a three-part Backshop Clinic series, Miles Hale demonstrates classic techniques for casting and painting rock, including instructions for making your own latex moulds.  In part one he discusses commercial molds and pouring plaster. - See more at: http://trainmasters.tv/videos/2016-01-1#sthash.XKbh741W.dpuf

Dab, dab, dab.....Painting my fascia

This is the first coat of red oxide on my fascia applied by dabbing it on with an old beat up brush.  The dabbing creates a textured surface which will look more realistic.   It is still wet and didn't cover completely so I'll have to add another coat before going on to other colors for my faux rust finish inspired by Tim Warris.  To see my blog on the rusty fascia project click HERE.

Making some progress

I'm making some progress in building a scratch build grain elevator. Here are some pictures. It's still a work in progress... More about the grain elevator on my website.

Part #8, Railroad Signs & Signals

Railroad Signs & Signals

To All: Some railroads proudly display a company sign near their headquarters or yard office. I captured this one on film at Vassar, Michigan (in the Thumb Area) in the 1980's. This was the location of the original TSBY lines, later sold to Huron & Eastern RR. Why not install a company sign(s) on your layout? Photo by Elvin Howland. Yours, Elvin Howland/E.
