3d printing and the paint booth/printing stand blog

This is the new blog entry for the new 3d printer, including building, as well as building the multi-use paint booth/printing stand....

Here is what opening the box revealed.....it got worse....:)

Fascia Color - First post on returning to work on the layout

Hi all,

Just checking on what people use for fascia colors.   I originally was going to go with black for a theatrical vignette look.  However, a lot of the 'guys' on the proto-list have gone with a green(ala CTC panel green that Joe Atkinson uses)   Not a fan of that color however, so going with a bolder green.   Looking to match the original IC green diamond emblem color.   The attached picture looks a lot lighter than in person due to room lighting and flash, so assume a medium/slightly dark green.

Homasote Spline Work

This is the crux of it.   If this step isn't done right, it'll never be right.

Per Jeff Otto, three 2 inch strips on end, screwed together with drywall screws....no glue, no need for clamps.   Handful of 8 foot long strips cut in half for borders on each side to attach scenery to.(Jeff suggests the borders cut at a 30 degree angle for a ballast profile)

Did the entire mainline in 4 hours....but thought better of it and went back to make sure it's all right.

Next project/step

This is just the ties from a P87 stores Ultimate turnout kit.   All the other goodies are on the bench.   Gonna try a little different thing and build it as a wye.   This will go where the northbound and southbound mains meet at Church.   A #8 so we should have no troubles with anything going through it, right????

Busy Weekend...

Trying to get ready for this weekend's RPM meet in St Louis(Collinsville, IL).....

I started Friday with a nearly empty room....just what was on the one wall of the basement, and had a couple test benchwork fixtures there as well.....

Here's what I started with:

Milestones

May not look like much, but have my DCC hooked up and this is the first official run on the new layout.   Stayed up past midnight to get this far last night, but it was worth it.   Stupid flash color changed the headlights to yellow....gonna have to figure how to white balance this baby.....stilll....i'm excited.

Cutting Homasote splines

Finally got around to cutting my two sheets of homasote into 2 inch spline material.    Special thanks to Jeff Otto for the 'proof of concept'(i.e. his beautiful layout) and to Matt Goodman from the Layout Construction group who showed how to cut duplicate strips with a circular saw and jig(Jeff's method is with a table saw which I ain't got)

Couple shots of the jig and how it works:

First shots going forward.    These are sections from the old layout.   Much modification ahead.    GMO711
