Marion 4160 No Diorama Yet

I was going to make a removable diorama for my Marion shovel, but in the end I realized I could not build what I wanted without damaging my open pit too much. I did modify my open pit and lay some track and scenic a small area so the Marion has a home. I still plan on making a diorama in a small display case, but that will be another project.

In the end here is where the shovel will sit on my layout.

Flex track

I am getting a little confused on laying down flex track, which side of the radius should the sliding track be on inside or outside and how does this work on a s curve.   Thank you  GEM

Colorado Front Range Railroad March Update

Here is the March up date and I am looking for any photos of Martin Drake Coal Plant in Colorado Springs 1960 or earlier. I can see all kinds of photos today or in the last 20 years. But I can tell from the maps i have from 1958 that the plant was much smaller. From Google Earth i can see two of the old brick building. So if any one can help with photos or a web site that I may have missed please let me know.

Using Berrett Hill Touch Toggles with MRServo

One of the most interesting electronic parts to come on the market lately is Berrett Hill’s Touch Toggles.  They’re little electronic switches that operate by the proximity of your finger.  There’s no mechanical movement, so you can put them behind acrylic control panel faceplates and other such and still operate them just by touching the surface.  Unlike a mechanical switch, they never wear out, and they come with built-in indicator lights.

Track work inches forwards

I have finally got around to working on my layout again. Here is the new segment of my layout's road bed. Also, I have solved the problem of my lionel cars that are equipped with electro couplers. Since I inherited these ones, I wanted to respect them and not modify the cads in any way. I also inherited their magazine and catalouge collection, in which was a vintage Great Model Railroads MR special.

Derailments: snap!

They happen...      This one just took place. Bother! I have to secure that roadbed!

Little Trees gets a fiddle yard

I recently completed the staging/fiddle yard for the Little Trees and Surfside. This is a simple shelf extension off of the right end, cantilevered over my office space.

Pokey Progress: Learning How to Super-elevate.

As construction of helix #3 continues, waiting for glue joints to dry gave me a chance to work on other aspects of the layout. So, with the main deck bench work and cork road bed complete, I decided to lay some of the mainline track and get some experience super-elevating curves. I've never done this before, but after a few trials, here's what I've come up with.

Seeking IR detector selection advice

Greetings all,

I’m looking to install a grade crossing on my HO Free-Mo module and am currently comparing the available optical detection systems. For the crossing itself I think I know which controller, grade crossing signal, and bell module I want to use; however, with regard to the detection hardware that will set the whole thing in motion, I’m stuck in analysis paralysis.
