ARZC Layout Update

It has been a long time since my last update.  Part of that is due to an addition to our family, we had our first child at the beginning of July, she takes up most of our time, but it is wonderful.  I've been working where I can on the layout, mainly getting the subroadbed, roadbed and mainline track installed as well as getting some rough cut fascia put up.  I now have a fully functional mainline loop for a continuous run, just need to cut the circuit breakers in when I get there.

Rethinking Power Yards

Over the past month I have been putting together my plans for rebuilding the old SASME T&SW layout into my own AT&SW layout.  I started the transition with the main peninsula first, whereas this section features the engine facilities, the freight yard, and has code 83 track. Alas, I have found the arrangement wanting, and in going back and forth between the old plans and my new arrangements I find them completely them inadequate since before the section was ever built.  In short, the overall plan lacks a power yard.

Fast Tracks turnouts

When I started my new layout I decided to go with the Fast Tracks jigs initially thinking of purchasing their dual  gauge system which was $150 for the assembly fixture, but realized I would need two, since I would need narrow gauge on both left and right. Since I only needed 6 dual gauge turnouts the cost would not be justified so I settled for a standard gauge #6 code 70 assembly jig. I bought this along with the point / frog tool, and 5 laser cut tie sets.

Ideas for small switching layout? (Decided on design I think)

I am looking for ideas that I could use for a small 2'x5' switching layout. I have that much space in my room and am trying to plan as much as possible to pitch the idea to my parents.

The switches available are:

Water Train in action

This train doesn't run very quickly but does a good job of holding track in place while the glue dries.  The smelter yard is in (hopefully) it's final form so the track is being glued, wiring to follow.  I'm using Weldbond to hold the track in place, if I need to make any changes or change out a switch (god forbid) it should be a relatively easy process.

Supplemental battery power?

Before starting to lay track on my new layout I'd like to explore the possibilities of supplemental battery power so I could only wire up the connecting tracks and leave the turnouts dead. This would greatly simplify the wiring and eliminate the need for tortoise or blue point controllers to power the frogs. It seems like a small battery could power the locos over the dead rails as long as they could recharge on the bulk of the track when running? The Stanton S-cab sounds like about what I want but I don't know anyone who has one.

Layout Update - 3 Nov 2015: Running Trains & Final Planning

This is the layout update for early November 2015. The wiring for the Paradigm to Union Station yard limit section (soldering feeders, connections to terminal strips, and connections to the main bus) has been completed. A DCC test of this section of power district 2 has also been successfully completed.  All of the tracks, including sidings, in the new section have been fully tested with DCC without any issues.

This picture shows the area where the DCC wiring has been completed.

Tight Flangway on Peco HO Turnout

I discovered today that I have a tight flangway on one of my peco turnouts.

I'm looking for suggestions on repairing it in place.

The red square shows the area of tightness. My NMRA track gauge can almost stand up on it's own between the 2 points marked perpendicular to the track..

Any help is appreciated!

Building A Piece Of History Now: Thurmond West Virginia-Backdrops 10/29

I am working on a design for a small scene for demonstrating scenery and track work for out model railroad. It will be small (roughly 1ft. x 1ft. with the front curving) I am looking for design ideas and what an interesting scene would be. Any ideas from those on here?

Thanks for all of your suggestions everyone. Thurmand seemed like a good location and the below area is what we will model. It will include a cantilever signal seen on the right and the three buildings as low relief background structures.

Simple Switch Machines for the BNML

I created a simple switch machine for controlling my Peco Turnouts from the fascia on my layout this week. The criteria I had in mind for these were as follows:
