Benchwork - Roadbed
Gas or Oil Lighting
So I'd been on and off working on lighting on my layout, using mainly LEDs. But I wanted an effect of an era that was just moving from gas or oil lighting into electric. Around last Christmas the wife had some of those little battery operated tea lights set up as decoration. I was watching one flicker and thought this could be a possible solution.
Minimum shelf width at choke point?
I am doing some track planning, at this point I'm just layout out the benchwork edges. I have a protrusion to deal with. It's a solid concrete post, probably rebar reinforced, load bearing, and definitely not modifiable. Don't even think about cutting into it. I need to narrow the layout width at the point that it squeezes past this protrusion, and I want the layout wide enough for a pair of parallel tracks.
Plywood, Cork and Track or Plywood, foam, Cork and track
HI Folks:
Hopefully going to start cutting wood and building in the next day or 2, and I have been wondering if cork roadbed on directly on the 1/2 inch plywood or if putting 1 inch of pink foam under it first (allowing me to carve creeks and rivers and other depressions is the way to go.
Ive in my other thread about cork / homosate ive gotten a variety of opinions, and I've decided that Homosate is out for sure, but I'm curious about using foam, and how to secure track if I do?
Thanks
TIM
Anyone used Blue Ridge Fibreboard?
Has anyone used Blue Ridge Fibreboard? (https://www.blueridgefiberboard.com/premium-insulating-sheathing-energy-saving-r-values/) I saw it at Menards right across from Homasote. It seems like a similar product, but a bit lighter and quite a bit cheaper. Was curious if it would hold paint and how it would handle getting wet.
What's on your workbench - May 2020
I'll get this rolling with a close up photo of a locomotive I'm doing a First Look on.... until I took a photo, I hadn't even noticed the 74V sign.
Backdrop material?
I am at the point where I need to put up a backdrop on my peninsula. It is a 2x4 type wall. Past layout I used masonite hardboard - but i can't remember if i used 1/4" or 1/8". My studs are on 24" centers - i am concerned that 1/8" may end up being wavy once put up?
Curious what other approaches you all have used. I could use drywall for the straight areas and masonite for corners.
Transitioning through decks
I'm currently in the process of building a layout loosely based on the INT Roaring Fork Sub featured on Appalachian Model Railroading. I've included the track plan for reference:
My question is: How do I transition the spline road bed between levels? The "no-lix" design moves from one level to the next at Point C on the right side of the plan.
Installing a turnout (prototype @ La Plata MO)
I have to admit, this was 20 minutes of fascinating movement. BNSF track gangs were repositioning a prebuilt turnout from near the Amtrak station further west along the sub. How they did it is interesting, as I've never seen this before. Enjoy the choreography of multiple Cat 33X hydraulic excavators (one with a nifty trick up its sleeves)
