Most cost effective way to get custom decals?

The thread about ALPS printers got me thinking about custom decals.  So here's a question for you guys.  What is the most cost effective way to get custom decals for a model project?

For one car/loco?

For 10 cars?

For 100?

At what point does it make sense to put together a custom order from MicroScale or other "traditional" decal manufacturer?  At what point does it make sense to invest in your own decal printing ability?

Car Wash on the Trenton Subdivision in N Scale

VIA Rail's, Kokanee Park passes through the Car Wash Area in VIA's Maintenance Shop, on my Trenton Subdivision in N Scale.

I have always wanted a Passenger Yard on the layout.  Setting up passenger trains, shop area and an opportunity to display unique rolling stock and engines in VIA Rail Service, provides another level of modeling and operations.

Info on Rolling stock for layout era

Where can I find information about the types of rolling stock used by a particular RR during a given era? I am modeling the Union Pacific south western region during the 80s to late 90s. I am having difficulty finding a definitive list of car types typically seen on the UP line during that period.

Future Acrylic

I have spent the last couple of days running around looking for Future Acrylic to use for a gloss coat on a freight car decal project, and have been unable to find it. Has it been discontinued? Is there a good substitute?

Thanks,

Skip Luke

Thing-a-week locomotive finished...a little too late, but finished...

I finally finished my thing-a-week locomotive! Here is CATS #12, a small 'modernish' electric locomotive. She is based off of an IHC, HO gauge GE 50-ton centercab chassis. As shown in other blog posts I have made, the cab is scratch-made from styrene, pantograph came from an IHC GG1 bought LONG ago, painted by hand. YES, I know I need to redo the weathering on the chassis. You don't realize how heavy the weathering is and how...coarse it is until you photograph the model. :P
