Thoughts on The Fleet

In preparing for the next operating night, I often think about the makeup of the car fleet and the compromises I make to get the layout running.

San Pablo Valley RR #51 (Backdating a Spectrum 4-4-0)

A new engine is close to joining the SPV roster - #51, the line's only standard gauge power.

#51 started as a Bachmann Spectrum 4-4-0 (the "Modern Baldwin" version).  Out of the box, she looked like this:

Converting On30 to S?

I had one of those oddball ideas today, and I'm almost afraid to even bring it up...

A Couple of Critters

Here are some shots of two related projects I am working on...a powered tool car, and an unpowered rail truck that it can push. More to come!

One for the GN fans

Sorry for the poor quality -- shot from my Windows phone a bit before 6 a.m., north end of Balmer Yard. Someone at one of our car shops has been having fun! The well-ballasted tracks in the mid-foreground are Main 2 and Main 1 a few feet timetable west of CP 23rd Avenue.

Accumate in N scale!

Hi folks,
Contrary to popular opinion, I am getting rid of all my Microtrains couplers on my rolling stock and instead standardise on Accumates and McHenry as secondary choice (oh that pesky spring but a good looking coupler).
I detest the slinky effect, even in very short trains and find them generally unreliable and overengineered.

I know a lot of folks are ditching the Accumate in favour of the MTL's so if anyone got any lying around, happy to take them off your hands!
